Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS News WEDNESDAY MAY 9, 2001 Knowles Canyon on Lake Powell to close temporarily for study Glen Canyon National Recreation Area superintendent Kitty L. Roberts announced a coop- erative study between the National Park Service and the U.S. Geological Survey to determine what impacts may be caused by recreational use in Lake Powell side canyons. Three of Lake Powells 96 named side canyons-Moqu- i, Forgotten and Knowles, all uplake from Bullfrog and Halls Crossing, were selected for the study since they are similar in width, depth, geology and sun exposure. Cheryl Brown receives service award Recently Cheryl Brown was presented with the Silver Bowl Award for Kane County for the year 2000. The award ceremony took place at the Provo Marriott and was hosted by the Points of Light Foundation in conjunction with local Volunteer Centers. Recipients from across the state were honored by Lieutenant Governor Olene S. Walker who presented each winner with a Silver Bowl. Each county Volunteer Center has the opportunity to submit names of outstanding volunteers in their respective communities, and Kane County Volunteer Center reviewed several service records of local citizens and decided that the type of quiet, dedicated volunteer service that Cheryl gives well represents the kind of citizenship that Kane County is attempting to foster. Cheryl has been a dedicated volunteer for many years and is currently acting PTA President at Kanab High School. For many years Cheryl has donated time and effort to support the annual Christmas Festival, Western Legends activities, and other community programs. She volunteers her time at the high school and is currently serving on a committee committed to bringing a Youth Center to the Kane County area. Cheryl is also a dedicated church member whose service extends across all ages. She is a loving mother and a wonderful neighbor.
