Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY News 3 MAY 9, 2001 Dinosaur Continued from Page 1 Hadrosaur from Montana. Simply put, Paleontology is the scientific study of Earths past life. Paleontologists basic source of information are fossils, the remains of ancient life. Such remains can take many forms, such as bones, shells or teeth (or impressions and casts thereof), plant stems and leaves, burrows, tracks (including footprints), and trails, and rarely, soft tissue. Fossils are usually found buried in ancient sediments, which frequently have been turned to solid rock, known as sedimentary rock. Nearly all of the rocks in Grand Staircase are sedimentary, andthus may contain fossils. By studyingfossils, paleontologists can determine what species of animals and plants lived in any given area, and thereby reconstruct how the plants, animals, and land interacted with each other (ecosystem). Frequently many pieces ofevidence are missing, such as remains of soft bodied animals (e.g. worms), which makes the paleontologists job much more challenging than the modem biologists, who can generally identify every part of a modem ecosystem. The paleontologist is quite literally a detective trying to uncover ancient clues to put together a long lost world. Paleontology as a rule excludes Kane County Hospital thanks its volunteers By Laurali Noteman In recognition of Volunteer week, the Kane County Hospital Board recognized the volunteers helping in The Thrift Store, Hospital Gift Shop and Kane County Long Term Care Facility at their last board meeting. There are 34 volunteers working with the Auxiliary and approximately 14 more sharing their time and talent in the Long Term Care Facility. Some Auxiliary participants work not only in the Thrift Store but also in the Long Term Care. There are several groups of musicians performing weekly or monthly. Some volunteers come in and do hair and nails or have established exercise programs designed for the age group they are addressing. The KCH residents respond with a smile, a thanks and often times you will see them tapping a toe or taking a spin around the floor. What a truly wonderful gift these individuals have offered. Then you have the tireless volunteers of the Auxiliary that year after year dazzle us all with their gifts of support and timeless efforts. All Board members offer a sincere thanks to and for them. KCH Administrator Mike Sinclair announced there would be three Board positions opening in this Novembers election. Human Resources Director Laurali Noteman updated the Board on the progress of students and loan repayments.. There are currently eight students on the program. There were originally nine, with one completing the schooling she applied for. KCH has loaned j? si $5,251 in 20002001 with repayment to date of $3,699. Noteman explained, Most of the students are opting to make payments through payroll deduction, or applying for Pell Grants and repaying loans when the grants come through. Two have chosen to work at KCH after graduation financial help. Sinclair closed the meeting with a request to participate in Big Online, a funding information source. Big Online is owned by Metasoft System, Inc. out of Vancouver, B.C. They provide information on sources for grant funding, who grants were awarded to, and what criteria and information is required to apply for the grant. Mayor Karen Alvey will be meeting with Sinclair to discuss the possibilities Big Online offers. until they have repaid their school loans.
