Show 28 The Kanab Area Vacation Guide Souvenir Edition Cedar Breaks - a Road Less Traveled Creek 8,100 feet above sea level. Different moods, views and hues, come with each passing hour from sunlight to sunset. The plateau itself can be a treat By Dixie Brunner Jutting red sandstone towers provide a blazing background to a rainbow of brilliant-colore- d wildflowers. Welcome to Cedar Breaks National Monument. Lying high atop the Markagunt Plateau, Cedar Breaks offers travelers an intimate glimpse of the red rock spires of southern Utah. Visitors can view the bowlshaped amphitheater situated along the western edge of the plateau at any of four over- looks. The pinnacles and buttresses of Cedar Breaks are more than 30 million years old, formed by the creative forces of wind and water erosion. The spectacular colors are courtesy of iron and manganese oxides. Many artists find Cedar Breaks more photogenic than its rival rival, Bryce National Park. Cedar Breaks has a dramatic elevation variation, from a high of red-spire- d 10,662 to a low at Ashdown on a hot day. The dense forest of e fir, Englemann sub-alpin- spruce, quaking aspen, and lush meadows containing some 150 species of wildflowers, provide visitors with comfortable tem- peratures and stress reduction from the lower elevations of southern Utah. A schedule of interpretive activities is available at the log cabin visitor center. The campground is open from June 15 until September 30. USEES! How do I get there from Kanab?
