Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY MARCH 14, 2001 14 Fredonia baseball splits Sports By Roger Cutler February 22 Country Express 78, TifTs 52 In a physical ballgame, Express got another big game from Bucky Orton, who scored 25 and brother Alan, who added 18, to pull out the win over an ever improving Tiff s team. Great play from Darin J ackman, who scored 17, and Eric Knowles, who scored 14 led Tiffs. February 24 Tiffs 76, Mohave 69 Eric Knowles proved to be too much for Mohave scoring 29 points and leading TifTs to vic- tory in Saturdays first game. Charles Hammon however led ' all scorers with 37, but he couldnt do it alone. Rez 65, Valley 56 After tipping over the leagues top team Country Express a few days earlier, The Rez proved to be 4f too much for Valley. The Rez enjoyed a comfortable lead at half 41 to 24, but Valley fought back to make it close. Bugsy once again led the Rez with 26, followed closely by Noey Tom with 25. Jake Ramsay led Valley with 16, including three treys. Houstons 69, Kane County Hospital 31 Not much to say here. Jeremy Houston led his team with 21 followed by Rick Lamb with 20. Mr. Nash led KCH with 11. February 27 Valley 43, Tiffs 41 This was a great game, close all the way although a low scor- ing affair as both teams struggled in the first half. ' the hawk Hawkins took charge and pulled this one out scoring 14 points. He was followed by teammate Brady the Moscow mauler Blasdell with 13. KCH had balanced scoring in the game although no one scored in double digits. March 1st Tiffs 65, Rez 60 In a tight game throughout and only four points separating them at half, Tiffs pulled this one out at the end as both teams fouled to gain possession at the buzzer. Tiffs was led by Darin Jackman with 17, followed by Eric Knowles with 12. John Lucas stepped in for the Rez and scored27, followed by Noey Tom with 19. Mohave 62, Express 54 As Express continues its slide, Mohave put together some excellent team scoring and overall play for the win. Jared led Mohave with 16 points with three other teammates in double digits. Andy Lowe was the only Express player to realize it was a basketball game scoring 30 shots. points on nine three-poi39 KCH Valley 68, With KCH scoring only 19 . points in the first 20 minutes of play, Valley breezed to victory on the hot hand of Charley Crosby who scored 19. March 3rd Houstons 66, Valley 61 It was all Jeremy Houston who took a break after scoring 29 points. Valley fought back in the late part of the second half but could not stop Mr. Houston. Valley was led by Charley Crosby with 15. nt the Mohave machine team by the narrow margin of four points. With the score at half 26 to 20 for KCH, it was evident the Hospital was in their take no prisoner mode and were settling for nothing less than a victory. Allen Riggs scored 15 for the winners, S followed by star Josh Blasdell with 14. John, Ive beenin twominutes wheresmysubBanks added 12. Charles Hammon scored 26 for Mohave. out-distanc- ex-KH- March 6th Tiffs 74, Houstons 68 Houstons, playing without the Gunners, stayed with an ever improving Tiffs team, but ran out of steam in the second half. Jackman and Knowles both scored 20 for the winners, while Brady McDonald scored 24 for the losers. Valley 44, Mohave 40 In a game that began as the lowest scoring of the season, Valley led at half, 16 to 8. Yes thats 24 points scored in 20 minutes of play. Neither team really lit things up in the second half either, although Charles Hammon remembered how to play in the old gym and scored 20 for the losers. Charley Crosby again led Valley with 16. K.C.H. 66, Express 53 The Hospital is now a team to be reckoned with, not that beating last years champs is proving to be a challenge for anyone lately! It was close at half with the score 28 to 27 for KCH. Holleys Houligans were led by T. Brock and John Banks both scoring 13, with John Seligman Antelopes winning, These games were scheduled to be played in Seligman, but they had recently seeded their field so the games were played in Fredonia with Seligman as the home team. Marcus Begay took the mound for Fredonia and though he was charged with the loss, he deserved a better fate than he received. Victimized by two critical errors and a missed assignment in the infield Begay pitched well enough to win this game. The Seligman pitcher was throwing a big slow roundhouse curve ball. The first time through the order the Lynx hitters were giving up on it only to have it drop in and over for a called strike. After both teams failed to score in the first inning, Kevin Simmons led off the top of the second with a two base hit. Richard Wheatley followed with a double, scoring Simmons and the Lynx went up Seligman came right back with four big runs in their half of the second to take a 1 lead. Levi Whited led off the third frame and reached on an error. Then with two outs Begay helped his own cause with a single, scoring 1-- 0. 4-- 7-- Mohave Valley ' KCH 5 5 5 3 4 5 5 7 7-- 6. 7-- 6. 4-- Rez a single. Justin Crandal grounded out to end the inning. The Lynx rally came up one run short. The Antelopes picked up a single with two out in their half of the fifth inning and sent the game into the sixth with As a cold Fredonia trailing neither team started rain falling, scored in the final two innings and the game ended with Fredonia down by one run, Seligman picked up seven runs on eight hits, while they committed four errors. While the weather is usually fine for outdoor sports in the southern half of the state, its a different story here on the north- -- batters a strikeout and a ground out. Marcus Begay pitched five innings, giving up seven hits, but he did not walk a single batter. Kevin Simmons surrendered one hit and one walk, but did not allow any runs to score. . Fredonia 7, Seligman 0 The rain started coming down quite hard at the end of the first game, but by the time the second game started, the storm had moved on. The wind stopped and the fans were quite comfortable for a while. However, another storm blew in later and the game was called after five innings, with Fredonia getting the vic- Kevin Simmons a pitched great game, a five intory, 7-- 0. He struck out two walks and hit issued seven, one batter, while two Seligman batters reached on errors. In a complete turnaround from the "first game, the Lynx bats struck early in this game. Levi Whited hit the first pitch of the game into right center for a hit. Nate Tait followed, hitting the second pitch into center. The centerfielder let it get by him and by the time he ran it down, Whited had scored. After Justin Anderson struck out, Marcus Begay had a two base hit, scoring Tait. Begay scored on an infield groundout. The inning ended with Fredonia up, The Lynx staged another big two-orally in the second inning. After the first two batters ning no-hitt- er. 3-- 0.
