It is open to women aged 35 to 64. Depending on the financial situation of the person, the costs range from free to a maximum of $50.00. The screening consists ofa breast exam and a pap test. Our nurses are certified by the State of Utah Department of Health as Cancer Screeners and, to many women, being examined by another woman is a real bonus. For those who qualify, a voucher is provided for a free mammogram. Please call our local health department office to schedule your cancer screening exam with our skilled staff. We are looking for volunteer drivers who would like to take a group of women to a health center that will honor our vouchers for mammograms. The health department has some funds available to pay for the gasoline needed for the trip. This could be an opportunity to combine a shopping trip with your appointment and have the trip paid for. Please call Ruthann Adams, R.N., B.S.N., at ex. 54 to discuss this project. An education component is also available. A nurse educator will provide information about breast cancer and the screening available to any group ofwomen who request it. We have made presentations to church groups, 435-673-35- i (435) ing. One day Josey spent several hours with Destiny, teaching her to turn her head to the side when he pulled on the halter. The technique was simple but important. When he pulled her head to the side, he pulled only until she stopped resisting and turned her head. Slowly, he taught her that if she obeyed, the pressure would stop. The horse began to realize that she could control the pressure by obeying, that nothing bad was going to happen to her, and that when she obeyed he would praise her. Gradually, she became easy to lead, reacting by habit to hours of quiet, caring instruction. Josey emphasized that anyone willing to learn and put in the, time can learn natural, horsemanship. The ohly back- -' ground you: need is that you have to have a lot of love in your heart, he said. But you might have to open up a side of you that you arent used to using: your artistic side. If something doesnt work, he explained, the trainer needs to stop, step back, and try a different, more creative way. I try to keep getting better, Josey said. The beauty of these animals is they are so forgiving. If you make changes, so will they. (This column is excerpted from an article that appeared in The Deseret News on January 30, ary staff werent making progress with her. Thats when they called in Walter Josey. After a few sessions with Destiny, Josey was leading the horse around the corral like a big, friendly dog. Soon, Destiny began allowing staff to approach and care for her. Then one day last fall, Josey saddled and rode the horse, something no one had ever done before. In his day job, Josey is an engineer who travels around the world installing satellite communications systems for large corporations. In his spare time, he works wonders with horses. Josey would rather not be called a horse whisperer because, he says, the term mystifies skills that anyone can learn. But this Apple Valley resident knows how to speak a horses language and when he talks, horses listen. Josey bought his first horse and started riding four years ago. Not long after that, he began having problems. Statistics say that 85 percent of new horse owners get out within a year, he said. They get scared and go on to something else. I 2001.) was well on my way to being in that 85 percent. Josey decided to learn something about horse training to help him stay safe in the saddle. He purchased videotapes emphasizing how to approach training from the horses point . of view. , My first year of riding, I learned I was riding the outside of the horse, he said. Then I learned I needed to ride the inside of the horse ini stead. Once I started learning about this type of relationship, I wanted to know more. Soon he was learning basic maneuvers and studying how Walter Josey is a gentle, patient horses were reacting to what trainer for Best Friends horses . Photo .he was doing.
