Show News 11-1- but that percentage dropped to only 63.7 of children two to ten years of age that were properly restrained. One of the most common mistakes parents make in restraining children is that they dont understand the need for different stages of child restraint use throughout a childs growth. Since most state laws only cover children through age two, many parents assume older kids are safe in just a seat belt. This is not the case! When children outgrow forward facing convertible seats at about age four and 40 pounds, they need to be restrained in a booster seat until they ape big enough to properly fit in an adult seat belt. The Utah Safety Councils Buckle Up For Love program was designed. to encourage more families to buckle up. Many combelt-positioni- ng panies, doctors offices, health departments and individuals participate in this program by contacting the Safety Council when they observe moving vehicles with unrestrained children on board. Buckle Up For Love is a purely educational program. The Safety Council sends information and resource materials in order to help individuals ensure that everyone is restrained properly every time they ride in the car. During 2000, over 1,500 people received valuable child safety seat information. The Utah Safety Council recommends that: All children weighing 80 pounds or less be restrained in an appropriate safety seat. All children 12 years old and younger be buckled in the back seat. All other occupants should be buckled up at all times. If your car has air bags: Never restrain an infant in a g child safety seat in the front seat. Always properly restrain all children age 12 and younger in the back seat. All occupants should be buckled up at all times. Anyone can help encourage others to buckle up their children and save lives by participating in the Buckle Up For Love program. If you observe a child unrestrained in a moving vehicle, call (5437) with information rear-facin- schools, hospitals, regarding the incident. Home of the Week Police tip It seems that some local resi- dents cant obtain firewood in the usual manner. You know, by either cutting it themselves or buying it from a commercial supplier. They steal it. The Police Department is investigating this and will bring charges against anyone when they are caught. During 1999, twenty-fou- r children under the age of 15 were killed in traffic crashes in Utah and another 3,104 children were injured. How can we decrease these numbers? By buckling children up. Fortunately, Utahs rate of child restraint use is increasing, but it isnt perfect.
