Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 22, 2000 News Utah Highway Patrol The holidays are coming!! By Trooper Terry C. Smith Utah Highway Patrol , Information Officer The holiday season will soon be here and once again it becomes a very busy time of year. We try to do more and more in a short amount of time. On our highways it is a very busy time of year. College students headed home for the holidays and everyone going to Grandma's house for that great turkey dinner. So again we need 'to be reminded of a few things. First, we need to make sure that when we travel everyone is safely buckled in and that children are in appropriate types of child restraints. Infants need to be rear facing until they are at least one year old and weigh at least 20 pounds. They must meet both criteria. Toddlers need to be in a forward-facing seat until they weigh 40 pounds. Children then need to booster be in a until at least70 pounds. The minimum requirement for seat belts is 49" and 80 pounds so it is extremely important that young children ride in booster seats. You may be stopped and cited if any-"on- e in your vehicle 19yearsofage or younger is not properly buckled up. Remember-zer- o tolerance. The Utah Highway patrol does not give warnings for seat belt and child restraint violations. Second, make sure that you are rested before your trip. Fatigue ruins a lot of holidays every year. Its quite hard to make a turn in the canyon if you are belt-positioni- ng asleep. Don't work all day and try to drive all night. It just doesn't work. Ifyou have to, break up the trip and stay somewhere in the middle. Too many Americans lose their lives on our roadways during the holiday season. Think about it. If someone you love dies during, the holiday season, the holidays will always be a very sad time of the year. So make sure you are rested! Third, DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE. If you do, you lose. As always, we will be extra diligent in our patrols to make sure our highways are safe. We will work longer hours looking and watching for impaired drivers. Your holidays wont be very cheerful if you are locked up in jail and your vehicle is impounded and it will really cut into your Christmas shopping money if you are paying fines and fees because you are arrested for DUI. If youre going to party, make sure you have a designated driver-part- y smart! You may save a even your own. As members of the Utah Highway Patrol, we will be working hard to make sure your holiday season is safe. We will be concenand child trating on seat-belrestraints around the Thanksgiving holiday. The month of December is Drunk and Drugged Drivers Awareness month and we will really put a lot of emphasis on DUI enforcement. So, as the holiday season begins, remember to play it smart, play it safe. life-may- be ts 2 Police tip Okay, lets use a little common sense here. DON'T leave your house, sheds or garages unlocked. DON'T leave your vehicles unlocked and DONT leave valuables such as purses, checkbooks, and wallets in plain view in your vehicles. Refunds for as little as one dollar and as much as $12,333 are waiting to be claimed by Utah taxpayers. The average refund for Utah is $429. Nationally, there is $67.4 million waiting to be claimed by ihore than 90,000 taxpayers. Some of the reasons why refund checks might not reach taxpayers are that people move and do not provide the IRS with a new address; some people provide an incorrect address or incomplete address; and others do not write their addresses November Subject stopped for 19, alleged speeding.
