Between environmental -- livestock industry, by itself, is no longer able to pre- serve the once thriving and ro- mantic spirit of the West. The western livestock indus- try faces many challenges. While there still seem to be plenty of cattle, there arent many places where cowboys go out on the wagon, spending long days gath- - ering cattle ahorseback, top- ping-of- f bucking horses in the morning, roping and dragging calves to the branding fire, sleeping on the ground, and spending the long evening hours around a campfire swappingsto- ries, singing, and reciting verse work. about Because of these changes, a number of horseback sporting events, including rodeo, roping, cutting, team penning and others have emerged as substitutes for the real thing. Fortunately, these substitues help preserve the tra- d horseback ditional, livestock handling skills of the West. They also help to keep the spirit of the West alive. In recent years, a new breed of event has also emerged to help preserve the cultural and roman- tic spirit of the West: Cowboy time-honore- Gatherings. These gatherings to honor and preserve the cultural dimension and romantic spirit' of the west through poetry, music art and Through the development of these gatherings, cowboy po- etry, in particular, has evolved a highly respectable art form, While Cheyenne Frontier is considered the grandaddy ofall rodeos, the Elko Poetry Gathering, staged in the heart of big outfit buckaroo country, is considered the grandaddy of cowboy gath- erings, with its debut in 1985. Noel said there had been two recent protests by Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance for the new Kanab City wells and two Kanab Irrigation Company wells adjacent to Kanab Creek. Noel showed commissioners recently completed San Juan County Wilderness Review In- which documents all well roads, sites, fences, recre- ational facilities, etc. that would normally preclude an area be-ing designated wilderness. San Juan County has taken the lead and have documented for all to see that the BLMs wilderness politically-motivate- d and said Noel, noted that Ed Sherick, a BLM area manager, was file chief author of the study, with help from other retired BLM em- technically-flawe- d, ployees. Former BLM employ-Mik- e ees who have worked in southern Utah are appalled at the Clinton-servanc- y Babbitt administrations efforts to ignore law and regulations in pursuit of this environmentally-ol- d motivated lock up of the west, We need to work together on this issue. Noel solicited the commissions support of reseating the volun- teer county resources commit- tee in an effort to provide the same documentation of re- sources in Kane County that San Juan has produced. I was a member of the resource commit-th- e tee last year and I would be glad to take the lead in ing the committee. The road and water issues are critical to the wilderness debate, said Noel, The documentation ofroads and road use in the county that the PFUSA roads committee has prepared, would be excellent to include in the report. The com-wmissioners voted to the committee at the next meet-Noing. Noel will provide the missioners with a list of interested members ofthe public who would be willing to serve. as el corn-form- er |
