The system that the United States uses to make free enterprise possible is upheld by the invisible hand, the concept that the free market is the best way to produce goods. The consumers decide what products will be successful, and the government doesnt force the market on them. Dont know what free terprise is? Well, well tell you. Adam Smith, a Scottish philosopher and the First great modem economist, wrote the Wealth of Nations (1776) and talked about the Invisible Hand. Mr. Smith believed that the best system was with the least amount of government interference. The government should set as few limits as possible over business, trade and manufacturing. Money that circulates produces more wealth than money that lies under a mattress. Banks encourage the circulation of money because they take the savings of some people and lend them out to other people. The money thus Svorks to create more money and more proyou- - ductivity in the economy cjsJLLS' (DiBacco, Mason, Appy). Adam Smith believed private ownership was far better than the practice of mercantilism, an economic policy based on state monopoly of trade and an attempt to transfer wealth from colonies to the parent country. Adam Smiths ideas help form the capitalist system. The two features were: (1) Most businesses are owned and operated; (2) Competition and the free market primarily determine prices and production. These features form the new factors of the free enterprise system as we know it today. They are Private Ownership, Competition, Risk, and Profit. Private Ownership One of the four factors of the free enterprise system is private ownership. This means that you have the freedom to own your home, car, and clothes. Ever take that for granted? We would probably think that cloning did work if we all ran around dressed the same way. What a boring world. In the United States we are free to own our own business. However, there are some restrictions about having one. For one thing, the business must comply with certain environmental measures. Also, where they are located can be restricted. The Free Enterprise System allows us to own anything we want that is not prohibited by law. Some countries arent even allowed the freedom of what house they want to live in, let alone own. Private ownership is an important factor of how the United States has become successful.
