Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY MARCH 1, 2000 Opinion 4 Dixie Speaks The following editorial is directed to the Kanab High School boys basketball team. We would like to congratulate them on an excellent 1999-200- 0 season. Their heroic efforts at getting to the State Championship game drew rave reviews, not only from their fans and parents, but the entire state as well. While they took second place, they were defined as winners by everyone familiar with high school basketball. Most adults will tell you that winning is very important. Our society is conditioned to focus on the one who walks away with the top prize. I felt bad Saturday night not because you lost, but you had earned the right to win. Your impressive play on Thursday and astounding performance on Friday night had me thinking that no one could possibly deny you the title. But I'd like to offer a few insights about life, which only come with being a whole lot older, (gosh I hate to admit that), than you. Experience has taught me that the best lessons in life come not from winning, but in the effort. Sometimes it's in the trying that you achieve. True integrity is earned by first learning humility. The KHS team competed hard and performed way beyond many peoples' expectations. You proved a lot of things about yourself in your efforts this year. But perhaps more importantly you taught a number of adults not to ever judge or underestimate the determination of a really great group of young adults such as you. The lessons you've learned from this particular basketball season will take you far in life. The next time anyone ever puts limitations on you or tells you what you can't accomplish.. ..just smile. ..you've shown people up before! Whale I saw disappointment in your faces after your loss, you must remember that second place at State is simply nothing to sneeze at. There is a rather large trophy in the high school trophy case now indicating that you achieved an honored state accomplishment. But your determination will become your legacy. You won't be remembered as much for playing in the state championship game, you'll be remembered for your heart and determination. The Southern Utah News would like to congratulate the Kanab High School basketball team and their coaching staff on their accomplishments this year. You made us all look good.
