Ninety American Pronghorns can now call ' the East Clark Bench of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument home. An additional 23 were released on an adjacent area of state school trust lands. As usual, many individuals and groups were instrumental in making the project happen. Key individuals were the new monument superintendent, Kate Cannon, as well as Kane County Commissioners Norman Carroll, Joe Judd, and Stephen Crosby. To project leaders, monument biologist Harry Barber and DWR biologist Norman McKee, the completion of this years phase of the project will indeed make a happy holiday season. Wildlife enthusiasts should also be aware of the several livestock producers in the area that have shown a willingness to accept the pronghorns onto their grazing pastures. Commonly known as antelope, pronghorns have no close relationship to the antelopes of Africa. Pronghorns are found only in North America. No other species are dose relatives. ' Formerly abundant in the tens of millions, pronghorns were headed for extinction by the early 1900s because of overhunting and the conversion of much of their rangelands to other uses. Several conversationalists, including President Theodore Roosevelt, became alarmed at the plight of the pronghorns. Measures were taken to protect the few remaining populations. By the the pronghorns had recovered enough to begin restocking some of their former habitat. In most western and midwestern states, as well as the western provinces of Canada, pronghorns are now flourishing in portions of their historical rangelands. However, a few areas are still vacant of the animals, and the restocking continues.
