Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY MARCH 24, 1999 Sports 1 999 wins City Men Valley askefball Tourney 5 69-6- This year's Kanab Basketball League Tournament began at the Fredonia High School gym with Country Express playing the Rez Gunners. Country Express was victorious in the contest, 92 to 71. Chandler Cutler led all scorers with 22 points. Jake Ramsay followed with 17, while Noey Tom led the Rez with 15. The next game saw Fredonia beat IGA in the tournament's only overtime contest, 70 to 66. Jared Black led the scoring with 21 points. The night's last contest was a lopsided event, with Valley beating the Kane County Hospital, Friday's action was at the Kanab Middle School. The First game at 6 p.m. pitted the First day's losers, Fredonia and Kane County Hospital. Fredonia sent the Hospital team home, winning by 21. Fredonia was led by Wayne The Wall Anderson with 17. Tuffy's then met Country Express at 7 p.m. Play was slow in the first half and when the smoke cleared, Tuffy's had won in a close contest, Casey Glover netted 27 for the Tunamen, while Chandler Cutler tallied 18 for the losers. At 8 p.m. IGA met Valley. The IGA team ran out of gas and were defeated soundly. Valley was led by Tony Baird with 24 points. At 9 p.m., the tired but ready to play Fredonia team met the Rez Gunners, who were given 72-3- 3. 65-6- 0. ley in what was the First of three games to be played by these teams. Valley proved to be too much for Casey Glover and his team and won by 12. Valley was led by JeffBairdwith 16. Casey Glover netted 18, including four shots. In the third game of the morning, Country Express met Fredonia, with the loser eliminated in the double elimi- nation tournament. Fredonia was to go home, losing David Angelo led the scoring with 19, followed by Jake 70-5- 2. Ramsay's 14. Wayne Anderson again led Fredonia with 13. The fourth game of the day saw Country Express having to turn around and play back to back games. First they had to beat Tuffy's for the right'to play the undefeated Valley team for thechampionship. Express could not keep up with the old, but talented, Tuffy's team. 76 to 57 was the Final, proving once again that youth and speed arent everything. Casey Glover led all scorers with 23, including Five Jeremy Houston added another 17. Travis Clark scored 13 and Chandler Cutler added ffCiXM Expresss season came to an end. In what was thought to be the championship contest, Valleys undefeated team met Tuffys at 4 p.m. In a very close game, Tuffy's ShaneNordfelt suffered an ankle injury, endinghis chances for an Olympic bid. The Final championship game was played on Thursday, March 18 at Kanab High School. Both teams started out slow with Tuffy's leading at the half, 28 to 26. Things heated up in the second half with Valley taking home the trophy, winning by four, Tony Baird, thisyear's MVP, led Valley with 14 points, followed by Jeff Baird with 12. However, the Seligman bus broke down and they were late arriving. Since there was not enough time to play two games, the Antelopes were forced to forfeit the First one. Zach Tait started on the mound for Fredonia and turned in three very good innings of work. In the fourth inning, he showed signs of tiring and was roughed up a bit. He was relieved in the fifth by J.R. Yellowhorse. In the First three innings, Zach gave up only two hits, both of them little bloopers just over the inField. He struck out seven, walked only two and got one man out on a pick-of- f play. Todd Martinet relieved J.R. with two out in the Fifth inning and struck out the only batter he faced in that inning. Fredonia added three runs to their score in the bottom of the sixth on a double, three walks and two Antelope errors. Martinet set the Antelopes down in order in the seventh on a pop up to the mound and two strikeouts to make the Final score 17-in favor of the conference record The Lynx. Lynx now stands two wins, no losses. Their overall record is Next week Monument Valley, a school, will send their JV to town to play the Lynx in a double header. Games times are 1 and 3 p.m. on Friday, March 26. Then on April 9, the Lynx travel to Monument Valley. The next conference game is at home against Joe City on April 1 6. 7. 1-- 9, 4-- 3. 4-- A KHS Track Opener The Kanab High School track team sent 27 athletes to participate in the 12 team Virgin Valley Invitational last week. Mikkel Brown took First in the high jump. Scott Johnson got a second place medal in the shot put and fourth in the discus. Jim Barnes sprinted to a second place finish in the 100 meter dash and Fifth in the 200.
