Message from the Wok Inn Dear Editor: How do you deal with a FIRE? This may be an easy question, but believe me when faced with the burning reality of, it all at 7:00 in the morning, its hard to even think straight as it happened in our kitchen on Monday, August 31. A portable fire extinguishes or the good oP fire hose always helps, but so do warm, caring, everyday people. Luckily for us, the town of Kanab has a great supply. We at the Wok Inn want to thank those people who instinctively forgot about their own work schedule or destination that morning to call for help and assisted in putting out the fire. We appreciate the neighbors who were willing to sacrifice a lot more than missing their breakfast in order to help us. We wish to thank so many of you who came or just for calling after the fire to offer your assistance and kind word$?' Last, but most importantly of all, to the Kanab Fire Brigade for the sheer courage and class you showed early that morning. , We are eternally grateful and due to everyones quick response, only our cooking area sustained minor damage and that we should reopen in a few days. As far back as I can remember, that white K has been the first thing one noticed upon arriving in our town. When I lived away, it spelled Home at the first sight of it. Each year in high school, one day in the spring was devoted to g the K. Then, the letter was cemented rock and it lasted through everything. Surely there is something or somebody who wants it restored. Couldnt it be a Scout project or a project for some organization? Something is missing from our view. Anybody else miss it? white-washin- Vaydes J. Brueck Kanab opinion of the Kane County Nursing Home My Dear Editor: I had formed a very dark opinion of nursing homes before I knew that I was to become a resident of one. I had read stories and articles of how elderly folks were just left in 'such a plaice - with little care, even under restraints. A very lonely, horrible existence to be tolerated while wishing that death would soon give release! After I became 85 years old, I had several small strokes and a more severe heart problem and realized that I could no longer live alone. I have three living sons, all with families of their own, so I didnt feel it was fair to burden them with an arthritic old lady. One of my sons lives in Glendale, Utah and his wife heard of this nursing home in Kanab. After visiting here, it was my decision' to pat in an application for my admission to live here. About one year later, I learned that I would be accepted. I have lived here since January 1,1998 and am very glad to be able to reverse the negative feelings I had before! I was relieved to know that my Social Security would help with my expenses. I have a lovely room, large window with a great view and a very pleasant roommate, Ina Hamblin. I have all the help I need but I am permitted to do as much for myself as I can. I have a shower or bath daily, my clothing is laundered nicely and daily. Our medicines are dispensed as per the doctors orders and we each have a call light button, should we need care. Our meals are well prepared with a variety of menus. Special diets are taken care of as needed. It is up to each person to take advantage of programs or activities offered us. Among these are exercise, bingo, card games, volunteers who come to entertain. Joyce Rhodes is one who comes each Monday to play the of good piano for our old favorites. The ones we remember and love. Another piano player, Nicole Bremness, entertains us with standard or classic piano solos. A local pharmacist, Kortney evening. One evening the chorus from ANNIE gave us a part of the music from that popular play. Such talent we admire and enjoy; We all have our own TVs and we also have a lot of good books to read and discuss. I should not forget to mention our new fish in our newly refurbished fish tank. There are six colorful fish with a beautiful background. We would like to thank Pat McCaughn and Dr. Vermeesch for all of the work they contribute to make the tank SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS AAA Deadlines AAA FRIDAY 1 PM Jean Sharkey so special. Most of us have relatives to visit and take us on outings. The home also has a van. Our driver, Ed Sullivan, and Activities Director, Delain Judd, take a van load for a scenic ride each week. We all know how many beautiful spots there are in this area. I talked with Brenda Martinet, who is in charge ofthe nurses here, and she gave me a few statistics such as; there are 24 long term residents, and two short term patients. There are 24 nurses and certified nursing assistants caring for us. I did not find out how many people or how many are on the kitchen staffbut I can imagine there are many. I think these facts should help dispute the horror stories about nursing homes, especially this talone. I for one, am grateful for three his Stirland, brought ented daughters to play piano, Kane County Nursing Home, violin and cello to brighten an and its doctors, nurses, aides sing-alon- g and staff, for their TLC! The Kane County Nursing home, which has been in existence for 30 years moved here to their new building on September 22, 1997, so I am sure we will be celebrating in our new location for the first year later in September. Thank you dear readers, for considering my new opinion of nursing homes. mainte-nancehousekeepi- ng wn wewfcEAnw The Southern Utah News (ISSN No. 0049-165is published every Wednesday at 26 N.
