The following was written Smith Greene: as a tribute to her grandparents byS o n y a Yesterday I walked in a summer shower. My feet carried me softly along and the misty eve surrounded my heart. Slowly, as in a dream, the familiar surrounding faded The rain fell soft upon my face. I felt memories like fragile snowflakes drifting about me And I reached out to catch them... ...I remember walking through the garden with Grandma, And through the sawmill with Grandpa. I think often of the lovely smell of flowers mingling in my memory with the odor of fresh sawdust. I remember homemade ice cream when we had to turn the crank; Going down into the cellar. And trading pop bottles for candy at the store. Later, I recall instant oatmeal... nuts Grandpa's grape And peanut butter that was kept in the fridge! Sometimes I think about the blue room my room and the playhouse at the top of the stairs. I remember the balcony, And the tiny soaps that were always kept in the downstairs bath. apple-cinnamo- n delight to recall the 4th of July parades, The Easter picnics And the excitement of Christmas in the family room. In fact, I even remember when there was no family room Just an old kitchen. And then I think of George of the dust and dirt Of the branded boards that now cover the walls. I fondly recall a thousand carefree summer days when the house in Fredonia was home... And the world was mine. I remember Pache and the harmonica... Pulling taffy at Christmas time, And a gift of Bird of Paradise Perfume (real perfume!) I Each memory is precious, yet, Most of all, I remember the love. I remember my grandparents who were always there, personifying happiness and security and joy. I m grown now, with a family of my own And circumstances have taken me far away from my Fredonia home. Yet there are times on a particularly breath-catchinsummers day or an especially chilly winter night That I find myself dreaming of childhood days, Once again young and carefree. And I realize that my memories of Grandma and Grandpa Judd Are not fragile snowflakes at all; Instead, they are the foundation upon which I have built my life And the tools with which I shall fashion a beautiful future.
