Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS COMMUNITY : WEDNESDAY JULY 15, 1998 Leave young animals and birds where you find them About this time every year, the Division of Wildlife receives elk calves and and deer pronghorn antelope fawns, picked up by people whc believe the animals have been abandoned. Those who find them often take them home and then , after how hard it is to feed and Re-sourc- find-ingo- es ut care for them, turn the newborns over to the Division. The Division doesnt have the personnel or facilities to raise young animals, and in turn sends the babies to private wildlife rehabilitators. Tremendous costs are incurred for the care of orphaned animals but the . ? ; ; best to leave a baby animal exactly where you find it. Wild animal parents often leave their young unattended while they feed and go about their daily routine. They know the young animal has a much better chance of survival on its own. Calves and fawns, almost odor-fre- e and well camouflaged with a spotted coat, are to survive with only periodic visits from a parent. The Division also discourages picking up baby birds. About this time each year, baby birds begin jumping from their nests, which have become well-adapte- d The NIFC ditional animals. If captive-raise- d animals are turned loose, they become nuisances, pests and even dangerous having lost their natural fear of people. So whats the best thing to do, should you find an elk calf, deer or pronghorn fawn in the wild? If you find an unattended newborn, leave it alone and walk away. Its probably being watched from some distance by its mother. If the baby is in obvious danger from cars or some other hazard, simply move it out of the way and back away. Dont carry the fawn away, and dont take it home. Its almost always formation about wildland fire in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Central America. People often asked me how to know when the time has come for a beloved pet to be euthanized. This is a very individual decision and should be made with the help of your veterinarian. The phrase quality of life is often used when a person is contemplating the future of their pet. Dogs love to run and play and go for rides in the car. They love to eat, bark, and bite holes in the rug. They love to sit on the sofa and watch TV with you or go for a swim in the lake, Cats love to eat as well, and they love to chase rainbows on the wall, snooze in the arm chair, and watch the world go by from You will the kitchen window. know when your pet is no longer able to enjoy life in his usual manner. Your vet may be able to extend your pets quality of life with medicines and treatments. But, one day, even these will not suffice, and you will know that it is time to say goodbye. We suggest that when that times comes, you ask your vet to come out to your home, if he is able. This is less traumatic for your pet, and he will just go to sleep in his bed or favdrite chair, or in the arms of his lovingowner. If this is not possible, take your pet to the vets office and stay with him until he has gone. This may be hard for you to do, but your pet will know you are there with him until the end. I had to go through this myself a little while ago. At the ripe old age of 16, Dram, my Chihuahua mix, had become very senile. He no longer knew the difference between indoors and outdoors. His sight was almost gone and he was bumping into things more often, even in a familiar environment. His decline happened over a period of time, and both he and I had become used to it. But one day I looked over at him struggling to climb onto the bed which was his favorite place to sleep and knew that it was time Dr. Allen came to say good-byhome and Dram went to to my sleep and never woke up. e. Euthanasia means gentle death. Many vets will adminisas if your ter a pet was going to have his teeth cleaned or have a wart removed. Then, when the pet is really sleepy, he will give the injection of euthanasia solution. In most cases, your pet will have passed away even before the full syringe has been given. It is inpre-anesthet- i i deed a gentle passing. Grieving over the loss of your pet is a normal reaction. Pets are part of our family and we feel their loss as we would any other family member. Time does heal, however, and if you have a space in your heart and your home, think about adopting another dog or cat to share your life.
