Show News SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY JULY 22, 1998 3 City employees challenge county workers By Carol Sullivan At the July 13 County Commission meeting, Kanab City Mayor Karen Alvey challenged the commissioners, We can do anything better than you can do. The challenge came when Ruth Ann Adams, Public Health Department, invited the city and county employees to challenge each other to set a goal of walking 80 miles to the Grand Canyon. The county commissioners took the bite and accepted the mayors challenge. The goal for everyone is to prevent heart disease. Heart disease is the number one killer in Kane County. Each side will work with teams of four and will be able to do a variety of activities to accomplish a mile. The first team organized is the three County Com- washed out again in the same place. Richard Cutler, representing the Duck Creek Ridge Owners Association, addressed the commission about excessive dust in the subdivision. Cutler said that Bonanza and Redwood are primary roads with heavy traffic that lead to other subdivisions. Drainage is a problem and according to Cutler, the road needs to be crowned. Cutler promised, If a water line is broken, we will take care of it. The Association believes that since they pay taxes in Kane County, the county should pay for road improvements. Commissioners stated that property taxes do not pay for roads. Hop Springs is still giving Glendale problems. Glendale relies on the springs for 6CK oftheir culinary water. The district is working for a grant to help them. Clyde Tucker, Chairman for the Council on Aging, and Harvey Zilm, recommended Ken Wanlass be the Kane County representative. The commissioners approved. Commissioners requested a proposal for maintefull-tim- nance, insurance, licensing, paint job, etc. The county will have multiple uses for the bus with everything from tourism uses, economic development, emergency management, transportation for fire crews, etc. County Clerk Karla Johnson reviewed t he process on how cer-tifie- d tax rates are figured. Johnson stated, We are losing more than we are gaining with new growth. Commissioners adopted the new certified tax exceeding their budget. They rate, with no tax increase. The Utah Legislature will be in Kane County on September 2 and 3. Portfolios will be prepared on local issues including: economics, education, health, water, funding, etc. With the Governors 21st Century, a plan for rural Utah, a major concern for Kane County is the need to put people to work. BLM manager Verlin Smith briefed the commissioners on what is being done at the Sand Dunes and why. The off road restriction was initiated for Wilderness reasons and has nothing to do with the Tiger Beetle. Commissioner Carroll asked, Why should we lock it up for wilderness when that was never the intent?" Smith responded that the BLM team looked at the entire area They needed a baseline and went back to 1976 maps What existed then is in the baseline. The team recommended to leave open some routes that existed in 1976. The team found new routes through vegetative areas that did not exist in 1976. Chairman Carroll asked, If this is closed, what and where will the public go for recreation. Smith indicated the temporary closure for vehicles will be until April of 1999.
