Show SOUTHZBN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY MARCH It, 1 Community 1 m Domestic Blitz By Dixie Brunner Tips from a former grill guru Theres one thing that I espe- cially love with the advent of warmer weather. Grill cooking. There are so many positive things about cooking on the grill. You can certainly say grill cooking is delicious, you can say its easy, you can even say it provides the perfect opportunity for the chef to commune with nature. These are all legitimate reasons to pledge your allegiance to the grill. But I have a better one-m- y husband does all the work. Before I get into trouble on this malefemale business, Id like to clarify that this is the way it is at our house. Im sure you all live in homes where the woman wields the burger flipper equally as often as the man, and thats all well and good. But I rather like our arrangement. To be honest, I retired from grill cooking. I tried on numerous occasions to do the charcoal bit, but it never worked out. I just wasnt a Weber Wizard. I did always dress the part of the gourmet griller. Id sport an adorable chefs hat, and a vogue apron with some annoying saying on it. But the bottom line was I didnt possess the patience or tools to be groovy at grilling. Remember the old grill cooking days when all you had to face a pile of dry briquets with was a bottle of charcoal starter? You remember the routine. Youd empty the bag of coals onto your grill, blacken your hands arranging them and then grab the starter fluid. Youd take the bottle and squeeze, squeeze and squeeze until you became faint from exertion. Then came the moment of truth. Youd ceremoniously close the matchbook cover smiling confidently at the dinner guests and strike the match. Boom! A flashy, explosive fireball would engulf the grill. The demonstration would create oohs and aahs from onlookers, and singed eyelashes and eyebrows for you. The coals would burn brightly for 30 seconds or so, then fade away. Youd repeat the process several times until neighbors would report the smell of gas coming from your yard. You couldnt have gotten the coals to burn ifyou had put them in a Detroit car after the Tigers won a World Series. There was no question about it, you were a grill guffaw! As usual, modem technology has changed things. No longer do you have to rub two sticks together to ignite the grill. One of the many products available for backyard barbecuists today is the electric fire starter. You plug this nifty little device into a socket and then stick the hot coil under the briquets until they are glowing. Its so easy, it almost takes the challenge out of grilling. The only drawback to this is that if you dont remember to put the electric starter out of reach after youre finished using it, the kids might decide that the family pet should be branded. ind But all these ventions came too late for me. I got discouraged when a typical outdoor cooking session would take four to six hours. And quite frankly, the kids began to turn up their noses at the food I was serving. I cant imagine why. They had their choice of raw beef or incinerated chicken. IVe long relinquished thejob as chief grill chef. My husband Dennis is super at outdoor cooking. You just give him the plate of uncooked food, and he returns in 15-2-0 minutes with perfectly cooked cuisine. Im not sure how he does it. For all I know, he runs out to a local restaurant and buys it, but the food he brings back is good. So for now, at our house, weve got an arrangement. I'll sit up on the deck and sip iced tea and wait for Dennis to finish cooking supper. new-fangle- McDonald - Miss America Starlet Pageant Shemra Lee McDonald, daughter of Jay and Jenny McDonald, recently won first runner-u- p in the Miss America Starlet Scholarship Pageant, which was held in St. George.
