Utro With the gardening season fast let me share some of the thoughts and feelings I have about what I present in this column, and totally believe in, when it comes to gardening Dr. Loral Linton ! ym tij mi 6 The total purpose and great hope in writing this column has been to increase the desire for knowledge, and gain understanding that all things in nature are provided for balance that they will work for and with us if we know the hows to make it possible. I will be the first to admit, and there are many organic gardeners like me, that do not understand all the processes that contribute to make it such a viable from of gardening! But we dont worry about it. There are those, with greater knowledge in this field than we, who readily admit there will always be many whys to it! The one thing we do know is. Weve Proven It Works! And to our advantage and One of the many practices in organics that is so vital to the promotion of good healthy soil is well-being- !! the importance of building mus, by providing a constant supply of organic matter. Its been proven by USDA soil scientists, by soil conservationists, as well as many everyday back-yar- d deners like myself, that soils with more organic matter in them producehigheryields than soils with less organic matter. It not only improves the soil but grows healthy plants and fruit that resists pests, and disease. As organic matter is applied to the soil, either by laying around growing thickly plants (mulching). Or incorporating it into the soil, microbiological activity within the soil begins its work of decomposing the matter and changing it into humus. An increase in humus can benefit and improve in many ways any kind of soil, one of which is a greater capacity for moisture retention in sandy soils. Another, the ability to open and loosen the structure of clay soil for better aeration. Its a situation, the gargreat win-wi- n dener, the soil and its inhabitants all benefit!!!
