His mothers reply, He did not tell you that you could take the car. He wouldnt even consider such a thing. Merlin insisted, He did too. Now wheres the key? His mother's reply, I dont have the key. Your dad wouldnt trust me with it. He always keeps it in his pocket. Anyway, hes out of town today. He also always keeps the car doors locked. Now Merlins dad thought a lot of that car. He had made a large door in one ofhis hay bams so he could keep his car out of the sun. The hot sun might make the paint blister and peel off. Well! Merlin and I went out to the bam so we could at least admire the car. Merlin tried the car doors. Yes, they were locked. Now ifwe could just get a door unlocked? This car didnt need a key to start it. It had an ignition switch similar to an electric light switch and Av 'tlgjillfilfft CUjgpj hi II Italians i v. a-.- s4nItH "ii CiiUN fr 'W ur Tis the season ofthey'ear when folks like the Glaziers make the we recognize various citizens for effort to come out and root for being representative of the the kids giving their all for Kanab Spirit. I crawled under the car, raised the floorboard and he handed me a heavy wire with a hook bent on the end of it. He guided me and I hooked the wire on the door handle and unlocked it. We found the crank so I cranked while he was inside adjusting the gas and spark and we soon had the motor running. I opened the bam door and he backed the car out. I think well drive out to the cemetery, he said. The cemetery was about one half mile from town. To get there we would go down a lane about one fourth of a mile, then turn and cross a field for about two hundred yards. When we arrived at the place we should turn and cross the field we could see some men building a fence around the cemetery. Merlin said, I think we had better go back home. He turned the car around there in the lane and we headed back to town. He drove the car back in the bam and we locked it just as we had found it. WTe may have traveled a mile. I knew nothing about driving a car but Merlin at age 13 drove like a veteran. Whether Merlin recognized his dad as one of the workers at the cemetery or was afraid the men there might tattle on us he never did tell me. A couple of days later, I met Merlins dad on the street and he commented to me, I was working out at the cemetery day before yesterday and saw a car drive down the lane and then turn around and go back to town. I would have sworn that it was my car. It sure looked like it but I had my car keys in my pocket. I w onder who in the country has a car that looks like mine. I had a sudden lapse of memory so I didnt tell him anything. If I had admitted that I was with Merlin in his car neither of us would have been able to sit down for a week! It was a lovely day in the spring Merlin crawled under the car of 1927. School had just been and found that the floor board dismissed for the day. As my wasnt fastened down. It could friend. Merlin and I were leaving the building, he said to me, My dad is out oftown today and he said I can take our car for a ride after school, do you want to go with me? Of course I wanted to go. They had only owned this car a couple of months. It was the third car owned in this small town in southern Utah. I had just passed my fourteenth birthday and Merlin would be fourteen within a month. I had only ridden in a car two or three times in my life. A car ride would be a real treat.
