Show News Opinion Letters Continued from Page 4 I consider myself fortunate to live in a community of such caring people. Zola Byrom Kanab Christmas and the holiday tree Dear Editor: The State of Utah will provide the nations capitol with its national holiday tree.Thistree was harvested from theManti-LaSa- l National Forest on November 15. Each of the 29 counties in Utah will also be represented at the nations capitol with a smaller tree. Kane Countys tree has been harvested, and will be transported to Washington, D.C. Our county tree will be decorated with ornaments made by the following people or groups: Valley Elementary School students, Layle Johnson (Cinnamon Bears), Donna Casebolt (Travel Council), Shirley Harris, Nancy Ford and Kanab High School Art Class, Kanab Womens Civic . Club. Many thanks to all of you who made these ornaments and made them available to decorate our countys holiday tree. Howard Roberts, Jr. Kanab Applauds Sorensen Dear Editor: I would first like to offer my sincere and profound amen to the November 13 guest editorial by Mr. Dellas Sorensen. Thank you, Mr. Sorensen, for expressing the feelings of my heart, arid the hearts of many true patriotic Americans. You are a true American hero. Thank you. Second, I would like to respond to the letter in that same paper by Mr. Wayne Hoskisson of Salt Lake City. You, sir, have a lot of nerve. How dare you criticize the citizens of the land that were you, a coal mine may have been 'just another place to avoid," but to us, sir, it would have been an opportunity for our husbands and fathers to support their families and raise their children where they choose. We love it here, we love working the land, we love raising our families here. But people like you, who support decisions like the monument, are making southern Utah families an endangered species, more fragile and more precious than your amber snails, spotted owls and pine trees. You are proud to be a Utahn, yet you deny us the same heritage. Please dont assume you know whats best for southern Utah that is a real slap in the face to those of us who actually live here. fifth-generati- on Anti-Sorens- en SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 20. 1906 Kane School Board meeting definitely not boring By Dixie Brunner It was one of those meetings g school board where all members were probably glad they were on the way out! Emotions out-goin- and tempers were high on issues facing the November 13 Kane County School Board. In a heavily-attende- d meeting, the school board once again spent the majority of its time dealing with problems at Kanab High School. The meeting began with Board President Nyle Willis welcoming incoming school board members and Verlin Lori Jacobs Avanish Pandya incumdefeated Smith, (Pandya Kanab bent Zelma Johnson, and Verlin Smith defeated Willis in the No- Dear Editor: The November 13th Guest Editorial I once was a Proud American by Dellas Sorensen causes me to feel embarrassment that the Southern Utah News would print it as an editorial and thereby so misrepresent Kane County. There are those of us who dont identify with such views. It was an interestingjux-tapositio- n to have the thoughtful letter from Mr. Hoskisson in the letters to the editor section and the Sorensen opinion enshrined as editorial. Sorensen states: I can parwell-reasone- tially understand what d. hap- pened in Oklahoma and I can understand why. some people band together and consider the federal government the enemy. This sounds to me like Sorensen sympathizes with the perpetrators of the Oklahoma City bomb- ing and justifies the monstrous act on the grounds of the presidential right to designate national monuments. If Sorensen believes that Radical Environmentalism is the fastest growing religion, I would counter that irrationality is surely the fastest growing mental disorder in Kane County. directly affected by the monuTom Carter ment creation. The new members will take office in January. The districts financial report was approved unanimously in the amount of $460,146.57. A home school application was approved for one student. The Board authorized Superintendent Dr. Nils Bayles to gather local prize donations for the U.S.B A. meeting. Kanab High School was invited to perform at the 1997 Professional Development Conference in St. George. The Board authorized the trip. The Board agreed to send a letter of appreciation to lawyer Doug Bates for the hours he has rendered in our behalf. Doug is suffering from pancreatic cancer. The issue of wrestling at Ordervihe High again surfaced. The problem is the board has a policy that they wont fund a X-Pre- ss i n Do we mean one trimester or school activity, unless the school in question can field a full team. Orderville wants a wrestling program, but while its close, does not possess a full team. Concerned parents and students were in attendance at the meeting, and told the board that they were serious about their request. acThey said that fund-raisin- g tivities were underway and that there was a lot of interest at younger grades. The Board approved payment to a coach. Parent Phillip Richins will assist. Kanab High School attendance policy was the next issue to be discussed, and temperatures began to rise. Board policy FBD provides that students must be in attendance 80 (12 absences a trimester) to receive credit for a class. A committee appointed by the board may consider extenuating circumstances and grant credit. The policy defines excused absence as personal sickness, sickness or death in the family, quarantine, weather or road conditions dangerous, or any other unusual cause acceptable to the superintendent or to the principal or the teacher. The other issue to be considered is that KHS considers two tardies as an absence. The policy was addressed this summer by staff, parents and administration on the issue of students missing too much school. Superintendent Bayles said that Board policy needed to be clarified in the following areas: mak-ingtrav- el one class? When will the board appoint a committee... in a crisis? Are excused absences included in the equation? A parent cited the fact a child could be legitimately 111 for a number of days, and then his her parents decide to take a trip with them-i- f they were over the "12, they were not going to get a grade or credit for the course, I.e., and miss out on participa- activition in ties. In that instance he reasoned, if he did not take the child with the family, they could be charged with neglect. We informed the kids of the policy this fall, said Kanab High School Principal Dr. Lyn McArthur. My understanding is that kids couldnt miss over 12 times a trimester. If parents made a good faith effort to get the students work in, get their assignments or explain what was going on, I dont think there would be a problem, commented one teacher on the issue of extenuating circumstances. The parent cited that constitutional rights of the parents superseded any District or State policy. You guys (the Board) asked us to tighten up our school, said KHS assistant principal Gene Drake passionately. 'You cant do that and then change the rules.
