Show SVVnSSV - I 'vV. .V. ' once was a Proud American By Dellas Sorensen The Fourth of July, the Ameri- can Flag, the Pledge of AlleBangiance, "The ner, This Land is My Land, the right to vote, hunt, and travel, the Constitution: We the People all have had a deep effect on me. I was called to serve my country and I was proud to do so. I learned while serving in Vietnamjust how lucky I was to be an American. I saw Vietnamese children in Saigon chase our garbage trucks to the dump to get something to eat. I saw farmers, knee-dee- p in mud, working from dayto light dark to grow enough food to feed their families. I saw mothers holding wounded children in their arms, and watched children look in vain for mothers and fathers they would never see again. I often expressed how grateful I was to be an American. Even with all the hippies protesting the war, I was still proud to live in the good ol U.S.A. One of the greatest moments in my life was putting my feet back on American soil; I even thought about kissingthe ground. I was proud to have placed my life on the line for my country, and I saw several of my friends pay the ultimate price giving their lives for the country they loved. To this day, I know the feeling of the sacrifices those men made for America. I know how I felt about the Constitution that God Himself directed our forefathers to establish a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Today I have lost many ofthose American feelings. I can parStar-Spangl- ed tially understand what hap- pened in Oklahoma. I can understand why some people band together and consider the fed- eral government the enemy. However, I did not need to join what I consider radical organizations; I could think for myself. I had always felt my right and power to vote could make a dif Eastern votes are AORt ference in our country. On September 21, the President of the United States created a new National Monument, designating 1.7 million acres of IMPORTANT Than Utahns Are we considered part of We the People Utah as the Grand Staircase Escalante Monument. This was land where he has probably never set foot himself. He listened only to a few people those who have never worked this land nor felt the joy and discouragement that come when one makes a living on the land. I do believe in preserving America. But this ? was ridiculous! Today, I believe the newest and fastest growing religion in America is Radical Environmentalism; the Earth is their god, and their well-pai- d ministers cry, Save the earth, the plants, and the animals, while they sit under a tree and count their easy-mad- e money. Some of it is from genuine stewards of the land. How many million tax dollars have been spent to save the wolf, the crane, the turtle, the snail, and yes, even some radical environmentalists? The President wanted their vote. He completely ignored the people the monument would affect the most the local people. Whether the monument was one million or ten million acres, or even the wThole state that was not what hurt. This is what concerns me: no longer do I feel the same when I say the pledge or see the flag; no longer do I feel proud of America. People who have never had the opportunity to put their lives on the line for this country will hard-workin- g, tax-payin- g, The Last Trail k Mary Western Families Pain may be eliminated for millions never understand the real loss. - A drug that It was not the land, nor the coal, (SPECIAL) in -- nor the jobs; I have a feeling for the loss of my rights. Our forefathers gave their lives for the right to live and to have our opinions heard. We lost what America is not land, not water, not mountains. We lost what is called Democracy. We, the People, lost what makes America America. ng End of Season Clearance at 24 East Center All Merchandise OFF 20-5- 0 Fine selection of handcrafted Indian jewelry, pottery, and much more!!
