Their little bit of green space is manicured better than a pedigree poodles nails. The lush green mantle of grass softly frames their house. Shrubs and flowers bloom evenly and in unison. Nary a weed would show its spores around there! I want a lawn like that. Dennis, hes out there again, I loudly whisper to my husband, as I peer through the blind slats. So, whats your point? He asks putting down the newspaper. Dont you feel just a little inadequate? Loud sigh. No Dixie, I really dont. We live in the west. We dont have to mow lawns here twice weekly like we did back east. Im glad about that. Tm not talkingjust grass, hon. We could spread some decorative rock around. There are rocks everywhere, he responds. so much, why dont I do some- thing about the yard? Ive tried, honest I have. But as with many skills other people possess and I dont, I suffer from landscape dyslexia. Tm just not overly-brigwhen it comes to decorating and taking care of outdoor space. I tried to get into it. I purchased a hoe, rake and some really cute fashion lawn care gloves, but it was to no avail. After an hour of pulling weeds just around the house, and looking inadequately at the large yard ahead, I decided that I was by the sorely weeds and that the job would probably require the assistance of a National Guard troop. So, I guess that Ill have to be content at dreaming of my ht out-number- ed neighbors yard. Perhaps someday, if Tm really lucky, theyll let me go over and walk on it. But until then, Ive got a plan. Im going to buy a whole bunch of those pink flamingo lawn ornaments for the front yard. Not decorative. People will be staring so hard at the gaudy plastic birds, theyll Rocks are rocks. I mean we need to get the miss seeing the weeds entirely. IfJifrl 'Ufdr . Hurry in for Best Selection and Save up to 50 In-St- ck catalog items! JCPenney CWALOG By Viv Adams, Mayor Members of the Kanab City Council feel that we need to do a better job of keeping the citizens of Kanab informed about what we are doing down here at City Hall. Dennis and Dixie Brunner, who in addition to being publishers of the Southern Utah News, and big boosters of our community, have indicated that they would publish city articles dealing with community matters. What is really unfortunate is that there are no journalists working for the city...so please be understanding as the Mayor tries to do a job for which he has no known qualifications. Most all of us know by now that the city water rates have increased substantially. This is the first increase since July of 1987. The reason the rates had to be raised are: 1) The requirement to build a gallon storage tank. This is required in order to insure adequate water to our citizens, and to also insure enough water pressure at our fire hydrants to fight fire throughout the city. 2) To drill two new water wells to insure an adequate supply of water for future use. 3) To upgrade existing water mains and to loop water lines to increase water pressure throughout the system. 4) To renovate the two quarter million one-milli- on gallon tanks in the southwest part of the city and to increase their elevation. The cost of this water improvement project is estimated to be approximately $1,426,059.38. The increase in our water rates will insure that we can pay for this improvement over the next ten years. We are hopeful that we can get a 0 loan from the Utah State Division of Water Resources to fund, along with city monies, the construction of these water improvements. Hopefully, the impact of the increased water rates can be offset by water conservation on the part of each of us.
