Show Opinion i SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY 4 JUNE 5,1996 r HOW LONG CO I GOTTA LIVE HERE The issue is the old Library building that stands next to the middle school. It has been a fixture in Kanab since 1939. It's a regal, old building that brings to mind a period of history that none of us wants forgotten. The city council is faced with the dilemma of whether to refurbish it at a high cost, or tear it down. What a tough challenge for the city. Do you tear down a building that is on the historical register, and one of the few remaining, old buildings in town? Or do you sink a lot of money into insurance and renovation, and continue operating it at taxpayer's expense? Quite frankly. I'd like to say I have a strong opinion, on the issue. Historic but I don't. I'm a total fence-sittbuildings remind of us our heritage, our past and the sacrifices that have been made for us. But plenty of dollars and cents, of which the city is not flush in, must be spent to renovate and operate the building. down or Therein lies the city council's problem-tea- r BEFORE FOLKS TREAT ME LIKE I BELONG 2 WELL, I M FOURTH Generation, AN'THEV CON SIPER ME ALMOST LOCAL er pay up? A group of Kanab citizens want the building left standing. They say that between grant dollars and fundraising, the task should be simple. Another group says that you shouldn't keep throwing money into a vacuum, that will eventually cost large amounts of money to keep operating. My first challenge to the "Save The Library" group is that they are going to have to present a sound fundraising operating expense plan. The city council is charged with spending taxpayer dollars in the wisest manner. How can they validate continued cost on an older building? What are your feelings on the old Library? Do you think that an historic building is worth the sacrifice, or do you think that the conservation of taxpayer's dollars should be the final determination? Please inform the city council of your opinion. The library issue will be voted on at the next city council meeting on June 11. Letters to the Editor What is your opinion ? Our procedure in recent years has been to give administrators a fixed dollar increase based on the teachers raises. By giving the administrators the same dollar raise as the teachers, the percentage increase for administrators would almost always be less than the teachers percentage increase. Teachers in Kane, on the other hand, received between 4.2 and 8.4 in raises depending on position on the salary schedule, which was very near the state average.
