Show School SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY APRIL 24. 1996 English 1 01 -- Grandpa: my hero By Stacey Heaton Junior at Valley High School As I view the world, the word hero is used much too often. The media is thriving with sports heroes, political heroes, and movie heroes. It is confusingto me, sometimes; how do I determine exactly what a hero is or was or should be? However, when I take time to think about a person of courage, integrity, and character which are the qualities of a real hero, one person always comes to mind. That person is my Grandpa Heaton; he is my hero. If I pattern my life after my grandpa, I will be a success. I may not be rich and famous, but I will succeed in life. My grandpa had dreams and aspirations; he never forgot them. He was honest with his fellowman. He gave a lifetime of service to others. Most of all, my grandpa had character. My Grandpa Heaton had lots of dreams for the future when he was a young man. He wanted an education, a good job, and happy family. As he grew older, these dreams and aspirations remained the same despite the many trials he endured. He graduated from Dixie Academy; he had to share a room with other boys, work full time, and Reflections winners go to school full time. He was the Shanny and Jake Rogers both won region Reflections competition... They first Park Ranger at Pipe Spring both competed at state, where Shanny won an honorable mention. As a lawyer, I will have many opportunities to serve my fellowman. I can choose to serve for the money or the honor, or I can be like my Grandpa Heaton and serve because it is the right thing to do. I choose, in advance, to be like my grandpa. My Grandpa Heaton possessed many good qualities; however, more than anything else, he had good character. He was moral, exhibited integrity, and was a decent human being. He was never mean to people or animals; he treated everyone with gentleness and kindness. He was moral in his dealings with his family, friends, and coworkers. He was someone to have as a role model. I was never ashamed to be called his granddaughter; I was proud to be known as one of his girls. If I conduct my life as did my Grandpa Heaton, I will be a good lawyer, wife, mother, and citizen. I have a true hero after which to pattern my life. It is up to me to do so; I aspire to this lofty goal. pire to be a lawyer; therefore, I need a good education. I want a good job; a good job requires that I work hard and hold onto my dream. I want a good marriage and a happy family like my parents and grandparents. If I live my dreams and never give up, I am sure I will be as successful as my grandfather. My Grandfather Heaton was an honest man. Everyone who dealt with him knew he was honest. He spoke the truth, and I never heard him say an ill word about anyone. He tried to look for the good in people. I have been with grandpa when he drove all the way back to a store to return change when the clerk had overpaid him. He always kept his word. If grandpa said he would be somewhere; he was there; if he said he would do something for you, he did it. People trusted Grandpa Heaton. An honest lawyer doesnt exist is the prevalent thought of today. It is my goal to be honest in my dealings and honest with myself. If I can accomplish this goal, I again will be a success. Editors note: Staceys grandpa Grandpa Heaton will be pleased I have not tarnished my good was C. Leonard Heaton of Mocname. casin, Arizona: My grandpa lived in a very small town inside the boundaries of the Paiute Indian Reservation in Arizona. His family was bilingual; all the children played and went to school with the Indian children. Grandpas door was always open to the Indians. He made phone calls for them, took them to the hospital, took them home when they were ill or drinking, assisted in dispute settlements, was a religious leader, and loved them. My grandpa served the Indians for over 50 years not for pay, but by choice. The tribe gave him a special tribute ceremony for his service and generosity in 1988.
