Called the Back to Nature Tour", it included a two night stay in Kanab using the town as a base for a hub and spoke tour of the surrounding natural wonders. In the summer of 1994 one Utah tour company was barely filling a single rental car a couple of times a month using the itinerary. Kane County launched an effort to attract this market by sending Travel Council director Steve Puro to the orient in the fall of 1994 and again in 1995 with the Utah Travel Council on their annual Asian Trade Mission. Meeting with travel agents in Japan and traveling with American receptive tour providers opened contacts and devel- oped personal relationships which the Japanese rely on in their marketing. Familiarization tours of Japanese companies hosted by the Kane County Travel Council brought the itinerary to life for those selling the trips in Japan. The results? In 1995 the same tour company booked 15 full busses of Japanese through the efforts of a travel company in Japan that launched a major advertising campaign promoting the tour. Now, in 1996, the same company has booked triple that number of tours beginning in early May and ending in October...and these are the results of only one of several companies promoting the tour! The Japanese spend more money traveling in our country than any other nationality visiting the United States, and they represent the fourth largest international market. The busses visiting Kanab this summer will add an estimated $565,000 in tourism dollars to the local economy that was not present in our economic mix two years ago, says Puro. Many times marketing efforts are not seen instantly, nor are they readily observed This is one case that can be tracked, and our marketing efforts can be seen to pay off. |
