Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY MARCH 27, 1996 Sports Running theKanablOK goes off, it is really easy to go out too fast and then have to struggle at the end. So dont be in a hurry, you will hear a split time at the one mile point. This will give you a gauge on how fast you are going. Dont panic if it is too fast or slow, there are still five miles to go. If there is one common mistake on this run, it is going out too fast. I feel that a slow start is smarter even though it is harder to do. For the next three miles, we are basically going downhill. Just enjoy the scenery and visit with the other runners. If those around you dont want to visit then dont keep it up. Just after you come around the turn by the Four Seasons Inn you will see the six-mimarker. If you can, this is the time to pick up the le ing. Thursday and Friday drink pi enty of water to hydrate your- self for the run. On race day, I usually arise about 5:30, have a banana and then head for the gazebo. Dress- ing for this race can be tricky. The start has had snow and also temperatures in the mid 50's. The buses start to leave about 6:45 a.m. There are al- ways restrooms at the start line, From the bus I head straight for the restroom. After taking care of that trouble, I usually go for a short jog just to loosen up. I dont want to use the first mile of the race loosening up like I have on my daily runs. When the starter yells five minutes to I head to the starting line, Here is where some common sense comes in. If you are plan- ningon running at a 10 minute mile pace, dont get in the front. Those runners are going to average less than a six minute per mile pace. When the gun pace and finish strong. You wont be able to ifyou have gone out too fast at the start, As you approach the finish line, you will hear the shouting and encouragement that make running a race so much fun. After you leave the finish chute, go to the refreshment area and get some juice andor water, walk around and socialize. It is best not to lay down. The legs will feel better tomorrow if you stay on them for a while and let the lactic acid be removed from the muscles, Stay around for the awards, you may not have placed, but you could still be a big winner in the drawing that starts right after the awards ceremony. Af-star-t, ter all, everyone that finishes is a winner in my book. I hope these tips have helped someone and that the running popula-pe- tion in Kanab will continue to grow. Ill see you on the roads and at the Johnson Canyon 10 mile run in November. Parts iPPG Paint Products Largest Inventory in the Area!
