Perhaps the question has come to your mind, how to form the rows within the 24" wide bed. It cannot be done in the usual way with a hoe. Ive tried it! Not with rows 4" apart! I had a metal tool made some years ago with tines 4" apart that I now use. However, in the beginning, I used the long handle of my rake. After measuring across the top, center and bottom of the bed every 4", Id lay the handle down, tines up and step on the handle to make an indentation, continuing down the row, matching up with the three measurements until all the rows were completed. If necessary to make them deeper Id run a finger down the indentation. Then sprinkle the bed lightly two or three times through the day to make the bed moist. Through trial and error I have come to find lots of pluses with the following method in covering the seed and gaining excellent germination. Have ready a large tub of previously soaked, wet peat moss. Squeezed lightly, by the handful, place it on top of the seeds down each furrow, push it lightly into the furrow to make sure the seeds make contact with the soil. When all the rows are filled sprinkle again very lightly. This method keeps the seeds moist for a long period. Ive had as many as two days pass before I could sprinkle the seed bed. Yet Ive never had a failure in seeds germinating. If rain comes the seeds are not washed away. The dark color of the peat draws and retains heat to the seeds as well. The peat is so light even the fine beginning ferns of carrots have no trouble breaking through. The peat serves as a mulch for the beginning plants too, retaining Youth from Kanab & Valley rehearse the moisture they need. I con- excellence, directs the chorus.
