I pause. I chew on my pen and wonder, once again, how I can presume to give advice to others about helping children succeed in school? The cause of this humility lives in my basement among piles of dirty clothes and unfinished homework. My two boys. The same two boys who break rules, defy logic and blame poor scores on teachers who must just not like them. Now and then I find someone cruising along the parental expressway with talented, eager, achieving, polite and pretty children sitting upright and properly belted in the back seat. I have met parents whose greatest struggle is whether to accept the scholarship offer from Harvard or the one from Yale. Ive met parents whose idea of a problem child is one who brings home a B and doesnt want to jump off a bridge. I try not to hate these people. More often', I find a weary traveler such as myself, trudging! along a rocky road with a white cane, calling out Be careful! to kids whove raced ahead and turned the corner. Im told by men whove made the journey and lived to tell the tale that there are no shortcuts on that road. There are detours and dead ends. Theres backing up and getting lost and going too fast and hitting potholes. Theres running out of gas. But theres also seeing new sights and finding new paths and new destinations. And from the hills we climb, winded and sore, there can be a breathtaking view of what lies ahead peaks, valleys and all. And so heres to safe roads. Know which direction you want to take your kids, but realize that in the end, theyll have to get there without you. With a little luck, theyll use your road map. Pay attention. Read the signs. Never fall asleep at the wheel. And be sure youre driving under the influence of wisdom, and caring and love. Bon voyage. vL5!y Eskelsen, !80 EkiM0'2 or Fredonia PTO Citizenship Assembly Thursday, Januaiy 25 the Fredonia PTO held their Third Citizenship Assembly. Ananda Bremness Sheldon is the man with the magic pencil and brush. Whenever anyone at Kanab High School needs some artwork done, Sheldon gets the call. He has won many awards in the art field and eventually wants to work in that area, but that is not his only talent. He has also been active in sports and drama. He likes to hike and swim and, like Ananda, does a great job in the classroom Sheldon is easy going, but very responsible and can always be counted on to do a job well. After an L.D.S. mission, Sheldon plans to attend school and develop his art talent to share with the world. Sheldon is the son of Kent and Inez Douglass. .
