Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 7, 1996 Opinion Letters Continued from Page 4 In re: California condor controversy This letter is addressed to the Kane County Commissioners, via Letters to the Editor. Attn: Joe Judd, Norman Carroll, Steve Crosby. Dear Commissioners: The Western States Coalition supports and endorses your resistance to the introduction of the California condor in Kane County and the Arizona Strip. In the past, there have been too many memorandums of understanding totally ignored and or excused for some reason, which makes them worthless. We urge you to stay on the path you have taken and resist any attempts to introduce that species in your area and until the Endangered Species Act is changed, amended, or done away with. We have found it nearly impossible to ever do legitimate business with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Thank you for all you do. We appreciate your good work and support. Met Johnson Executive Director Western States Coalition Support and appreciation for the hospital Dear Editor: Recently it necessitated me spending four days in our local hospital under the care of Doctor Roberts and the wonderful care received from the nurses. We need more Sallys who represent the caring and dedicated nursing staff. I received excellent care. The meals served were outstanding, thanks to the kitchen personnel. We are very fortunate that we have outstanding doctors and outstanding hospital. Wayne S. Hunsaker Kanab A correction back. Looks like Kaiparowitz is heating up so it must be time to sharpen up the old word processor and get into the fray. My attitude has changed some since the last battle, but there are some things that really worry me about this new development. The first worry is this: I have attended a lot of workshops over the years with people from all over the world. I asked an Arab one time why they charged so much for their oil. He said they were just trying to get their bank accounts built up enough so when they run out of oil in 40 years, they could afford to buy energy back from us in the form of coal. If all you have to do is wait a few years, why sell it now for pennies on the dollar when your kids and grandkids could get what it is really worth. It will only get more valuable the longer it is there. Also, why let a Dutch company make the big money, why not a Kane County company? Why set your sights so low? If you are going to lose the tourist trade, why not at least get enough money to make it worth while. I am sure people will scoff and say how could Kane County people ever get such a project going. I know one of the countrys best geologists who lives right there. He helped Consolidated get their Sufco mine running. (Roger Holland). I know a local who is a mining engineer (John Beesley). I know many who live there worked for Energy Fuels. I know a former local who has started a coal trucking company and run it for years. (Dave Ogden). Lynn Goodfellow or Lane Little could start and run a company like that too. There is no need to look outside the county for a Company. Sell stock right there and start your own. Get a law on the books right now that says Kane County coal will only be mined by Kane Countians (is that a word?) Who else will care as much about the quality of life there as your own local people. Will someone in Holland care what happens to your tourist fees, and maintain the beauty of support and love during the time the area. As an outsider now, I of Dads illness. A very big thanks would expect to pay, especially to the home health nurses who if I go there to camp. Then in 20 spent their time so we were able years or so when I go back up to to have Dad at home. Also, a big, big thanks to all Nephi Pasture to relive the old cattle and hunting days, it will our wonderful friends who were still be there. there for us when we experiI have always thought that enced the fire in our home. Thanks to all again. We love someday the coal will really be worth something to our kids and grandkids. Why sell it for nothing now? Why not start training your kids in science classes to liquefy coal like the Germans did in WW II. Then it can be moved without trucks. There is almost unlimited state money right now in school to work programs. What better use than in training your students in taking the old German technology and adding to it until it really works great and you control every facet of the mining and every dollar of the coal at Kaiparowitz. You can see that I am being entirely selfish in this because, if you or I are doing all this, there will not be as much need for more people to move in, and Kanab can stay a little more like Kanab for a little longer. There is something there worth more than money. Dont trade it cheaply. Ron Hamblin Monroe, Utah PS. I dont get the paper, so if you want to call me names, etc., youll have to write or call me.
