What you may not know about Social Security Courtesy of Robert Frisbey, St. George S.S. Center Social Security cards carry new message: Protect both your card and your number to prevent their misuse is the message on the new version of the 5.5. card issued since early summer. For years the message was carry your card in your purse or wallet.Times have changed and so has the message. Social Security now encourages people to record their numbers and to keep their cards and numbers in a safe place, Frisbey said. The message on the stub attached to the new version of the Social Security number card also reminds people to show their cards to their employers when starting a new job. It is important that the employer gets the employee's S.S. number and name right so that his or her earnings can be recorded cor- rectly. Social Security benefits are based on the earnings informat ion recorded under a person's S.S. number. Missing earnings could result in failure to qualify for benefits or lower benefits. Things you might not know about Social Security. A person needs a certain amount of work under S.S. to qualify for benefits. The most work you would need under present law is 10 years to be fully injured for retirement, disability, and survivors benefits and Medicare hospital insurance. The latest report of the Social Security Board ofTrustees notes that S.S. will have the resources to continue paying benefits, without having to raise taxes, until the year 2029. You don't have to retire to get Medicare. When you approach 65, you should contact your Social Security office and apply in time for coverage to begin on your 65th birthday. If you are disabled, you can collect 5.5. disability benefits and still work as long as the work is not "substantial. Generally, earnings of 8500 a month is considered subst ant ial work. I lowever, there are several rules, called "disability work incentives, which permit you to earn more and cont inue to receive cash benefits and Medicare or Medicaid coverage until you can do substantial work. Social Security is more than retirement. Approximately 10 million adults are currently receiving survivors or disability benefits, and three million children are getting S.S. benefits because a family breadwinner has died or become |
