Show lxi iiiiitn SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS Opinion WEDNESDAY JANUARY 2S, 1994 Dixie Speaks Congressman Bill Orton held a town meeting in Kanab last Saturday. A good number of people turned out at the Kane County Commission Chambers to talk with Orton, and hear his opinion on subjects as diverse as AIDS to public land grazing. Orton patiently listened to peoples' complaints and suggestions on how to make a better government. The people answered with some really good ideas. One gentleman suggested that when a natural disaster occurs such as the California earthquake last week, that people be able to send donations of food and supplies free via the U.S. Postal Service. He reasoned that if shipping donations was made easier, more people would answer the call for help, and it'd be less financial strain on the government. Good idea. I wish all of our elected representatives could understand that government works best when it listens to the people. Orton also took time to explain the history of some subjects, such as Social Security. He gave background on why Easterners react the way they do to some issues such as grazing. All of these things, while we may not agree with how things are or have been done, inform the public and give them a better understanding of why sometimes the wheels of government turn so slowly. Now we all know that this meeting was in no small way connected with the fact that it's an election year for Orton-tha- t basically goes without saying. But grateful for the opportunity to be heard! Marcie Castor Dusty, Danny and David Kanab Avoid Prejudice Dear Editor: My boys received new clothes for Christmas from some friends, but my oldest boy wont wear them because hes afraid hell be teased at school. Is that what parents and schools are teaching that you have to wear certain clothes to be accepted? I went into the Thrift store one day to see if they had Christmas lights. Well, my oldest boy has a Lagoon shirt that we bought him, the last time we went to Lagoon but my son got teased because the other kids saw me go into the Thrift store, and said thatthe shirt was from the Thrift store. Fortheir info, I bought it at Lagoon. But thats not the point. Why must people be prejudiced over color, religion, the clothes that people wear, etc? I think its stupid. I could care less if someone did something wrong. Fm not going to be prejudiced about it. And I hope Im teaching my kids right by telling them not to be prejudiced and not to be a bigot. As many places as Ive been or lived Ive made friends, of different colors, races, religions, etc. and I love every one of my friends. When I make a friend, its for a long time. Fve known one lady for 19 years. We still write and call each other. Theres a black Mayor declares 1 994 year of library Mayor VivAdamshas declared 1994 as Kanab City Library Year.
