Emphasize the word FINALLY. Im mot a big fan of the Olympic games, and by looking at crowd attendance on the television, people in Athens arent big fans either. And they even invented the whole thing. Why? Its goofy. Or should I say the majority of the events are goofy. There are some events that are worthwhile. Basketball, baseball, track and field, soccer and gymnastics come to mind as actual sporting events. But for every actual sport, there's some random activity that someone invented by being bored. Example: A lady and her two friends get bored at the community pool swimming laps, so they decide to get crazy and play Simon says with dance moves underwater. I Ience, synchronized swimming is invented. I lere's a rundown of the goofiest Olympic sports, what their official description is. and what it really means. Official synchronized swimming description: A sport often described as dance in the water, it consists of special elements like strength, flexibility, grace, artistry and long underwater endurance." What it really is: Never has the word sport" been used more loosely than in describing synchronized swimming. This activity is kind of like vour cousin Vinnie. You know Vinnie. the one with the comb-ovetries to sell g you on schemes every two weeks, h still wears jeans. You know. Vinnie. To everyone else in your family, Vinnie is a joke, a black sheep, and comic relief. But Vinnie actually believes T! He has no clue what a joke he actually is. Synchronized swimmers are the Vinnie of the summer Olympics. They think what they're doing is graceful, they think it's actually a sport, and they think someone cares. They're wrong. Official trampoline jumping description: Grace, rhvthm. skill and dynamic jeans movement are only some of its characteristics. What it really is: Some dude jumping on a trampoline. Yes, this is actually an Olympic event, not some joke from a Seinfeld episode. Did you actually see this on the tube? 1 watched, with my eyes burning, for about five minutes. Wow. I bet the ratings were through the roof on this one. Official table tennis description: Table tennis is an individual sport, which includes both individual and team events. Depending on gender, table tennis has singles. doubles, mixed doubles and team disciplines." What it really is: Once again, the word sport is abused like a lumberjack's chainsaw. I'll give these people some credit, they are spectacular at table tennis. But. uh. who cares. I throw a pretty good game of lawn darts, but you won't see me in official Nike gear, tennis shoes and a sweatband in my back yard pretending I'm a gifted athlete. Official badminton description: "Badminton is a sport that can be played by men and women of all skill levels and all ages. But to compete at the highest levels successfully, athletes must develop special skills such as technique, stamina, strength and flexibility. What it really is: Badminton, while mildly amusing in gym class and at family reunions, certainly does not require strength and flexibility. What it does require, however. is that goofy white birdy thing and an extreme amount of patience. Back in high school. I can recall our days of badminton. It was fun for all of about five minutes. It was then and there that all of us looked at ing classes for adult and youths. For more information call 525-279- Official team handball description: Handball is played in an indoor court between two teams of seven players each. The team with the most goals wins. What it really is: A cheap of lacrosse, only withrip-oout the sticks. And oh yeah, parts of soccer, hockey and basketball are ripped off as well. Lets see here, two teams on a basketball court try and throw a ball through a net. defended by a goalie. Anything sound familiar ff here? Its a good thing none of these real sports are copyrighted. because team handball would be getting sued all over the place. Dumb. dumb, dumb. Of course, there is a silver lining in all of this. Football season is here, and the summer games won't bother us for another four years. hcj;jy3 jjuyimjj a healthier living environment about what the ENERGY STAR label could mean for your new home Build Ask change. www.energystar.gov ENERGY Star is sponsored try the US Environmental Piolection Agency and the US Department of Energv WITH THESE TWO MEN WORKING FOR YOU..
