Statistics tell us that if spam continues to grow at its current rate, the Internet will no longer handle the load within the next year. However, the answer to the problem does not lie in more legislation, it lies in improved technology and consumer awareness. Most people don't realize this, but businesses don't suffer nearly as badly from spam as do home computer users. Why not? Because most large companies have I T departments that filter through the company servers and stop it before it reaches their employees. But home users stand at the mercy' of their Internet serv ice provider (ISP) to defend them against the onslaught of spam, and most ISP's fail miserably. Spammers change their tactics faster than ISP's can throw up defenses. An AOL employee recently confessed that many of the filters they set up today to stop unsolicited probably won't work for more than a week. Instead of trying to get heard through the clutter of all that Spam, some businesses and consumers agree to create private communication channels." A very simple example of this principle in action involves a free software program called "NewsMon." Created by copywriter and newsletter publisher, Paul Myers, this little program available at n wiY.iwwsmon.com enables newsletter publishers to instantly alert their subscribers Not when they post a newsletter issue to the Web without sending an announcement. Whether you publish a family newsletter w ith six members or a giant business newsletter with 100,000 subscribers, "NewsMon" provides faster communication with no chance shufof getting lost in the fle. NewsMon" works with a formula. First, simple, three-ste- p upload your newsletter or other information to your Web site. Second, update a small text file on your Web site. Third, your subscribers receive an automatic notification about the newsletter posting next time they do an update in NewsMon." Now you might say to yourself. I don't have a newsletter, how does this apply to me? Well. I'll bet you subscribe to a few newsletters and every once in a while you notice your latest issue never appeared and you wondered what happened to it. Expect the problem to get worse as every ISP struggles under the crushing weight of spam. Keep your eye out for more innovative wavs to solve the spam problem and try to take advantage of them whenever possible, especially if they make sense and cost very little to use or implement. |
