The school had several winners in competitions relating to dental assisting, veterinary assisting and pharmacology. Elizabeth Cebrowski, Brandon Vernon, and Brittany Burnell took first place at the State I lOSA competition in Medical Reading. Each member of the teams had to read five required books on topics ranging from A.l.D.S. to premature birth and then took a test with near perfect scores. Jenn Swenson took first in the National Health Issues Exam asking for solutions to myriad problems facing medical professionals in 2002. The topic of war is never an easy subject to address. Images of death and rebellion are intermingled with portraits of patriotism and bravery. At a recent gathering in Bountiful of area war veterans, this mix of ideas was visible as former servicemen from World War II and the Korean Conflict reflected on their own experitheir with ences, mingled thoughts on the world today. Ralph Ryan served in the Navy in WWII, when Hitler's hatred raged throughout Europe. 1 tier says Ryan, was a criminal who got loose. I don't like war, but somewhere, you have to stop those kind of people, adds Ryan. The ravages of one man's destructive nature left an indelible mark on Ryan who equates Saddam Hussein's reign with the atrocities of half a century ago. Knowing what Hitler did, this guy (Hussein) has similar patterns. Educator receives achievement award BY JAN HOPKINS Betty Spencer, a prominent figure in the Davis District educational community, has been recognized by the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Women Educators, for the Woman of Achievement Award. She received the award last month at the University of Utah. Spencer is originally from Cedar City but her educational career has been focused in Davis County schools. She with a masters graduated degree from Idaho State University in 1981. When her family transferred to the Wasatch Front, she began work in Davis District, teaching special education and Upcoming Meetings and Jim Loveless share opinions and memories about past and present military conflicts. In 1991, Spencer received an administrators endorsement and began as an administrator at Wasatch then transferred Elementary, to Meadowbrook Elementary. She has been president of UCIRA and facilitated work with United Way as a district coordinator. Spencer became a member of Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, 1993, and received the Utah Rookie Principal of the year from UAESR In 1998, she became the University of Utah Liason Coordinator for Davis District, joining the staff and development department. She has facilitated and presented workshops in the areas of cooperative learning and multiple intelligence. Spencer has become an outstanding presenter of the latest in Human Dynamics and Action Research, Teacher Induction and Mentoring.
