I missed on the chance to go see University of Utah and Utah State play football on Saturday night at Rice Stadium, a fun and traditional Utah sporting event. Lancers pull off win in double BY JORDAN LIVINGSTON Clipper Sports Editor It was a game that seemed may never end. The Layton Lancers pulled out a double overtime win over the Clearfield Falcons Tuesday afternoon Lancer junior Amber Strickland led her team, scoring two goals, including one in the second overtime, to give Layton the win. This was Strickland's first game back for the Lancers after suffering an injury earlier in the year. Were glad to have her back! said Layton coach Nancy Christensen. She's very hungry for that goal." Clearfield scored the first goal of the game when freshman Darcee Kawaguchi fielded a comer kick from Jennie Smith, and booted it in. Despite Clearfield's early start, they seemed very slow and unexited in the first half. We had a horrible first half! said Clearfield coach Richard Swanson. I didn't have the team prepared, it was 3-- my bad. Clearfield's defense had troubles getting to the ball, allowing a faster moving Layton team to keep the ball at their end most of the first half. The Lancers evened things up when sophomore Charity Weston beat four defenders to take a pass from midfield. Weston then sent a perfect pass to a sprinting Kristen Coombs, who sent it past a diving Haley Barker, putting the score at Barker was one of the bright spots for the Clearfield defense the w hole game. Following the Layton goal. Barker made two nice saves, to prevent Strickland and Lissa Braithwaite from scoring. Clearfield's defense seemed unable to find good footing on the ball, and was unable to locate the center of the field for most of the first half. The Falcons almost took the lead when Laurie Moss 1. made an attempt at goal, but was wide, ending the first half with a 1 score. At the beginning of play in the second half. Barker again wowed the fans with an amazing stop on a Coombs attempt. However, seconds afterward. Strickland scored her first goal of the game, with a hard shot on the left side, giving Layton a 1 lead. In the middle of the second half, a strange turn of events took place, as Clearfield's few fans were asked by the referee to mov e to another side of the field after complaining about a call. Confused by the decision. Swanson was quickly yellow-carde- d when he questioned the officials judgement. The wasted time and controversy seemed to ignite the Falcons, as they scored again when Katie Miller sent a great pass to Smith for the score to tie the game. The Falcons finally were playing like they wanted the win. playing great defense. They stopped the Lancers from scoring to force an overtime. The first overtime was saved by the hustling play of Clearfields Tagan Taylor. Taylors defensive efforts frustrated Layton, who could not get by her. In the second overtime, Clearfield seemed to run out of 2-- gas. Layton's Chelsy Ashment kicked a midfield pass to a wide open Weston. Weston proceeded to flick a short kick over to Strickland for the deciding score. It was a good win! said Christensen. We did what we needed to do, score! Layton improves to 2 on the season, and faces a tough opponent next week in Davis. We're going to work hard to be ready? Christensen said. With the loss, the Falcons adopt an even 4 record. We were content letting them get to the ball all day? said Swanson. I just dont feel like I had them ready to - 5-- 7-- 7-- 2-- SOCCER continued from A9 Heather Amell.
