Show THE IBUNDERBIRD • SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSllY • TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 1993 • PAGE 27 'Bird gridders open season 0-2 The Southern Utah University football team started the season off with losses to Nothem Arizona University and Angelo State University, two non-conference opponents. Against NAU, the Thunderbirds jumped out to a 14-0 first q_uarter lead on a pair of Rick Robins to Daniel Rederford touchdown passes and didn't trail in the game until late in the game, when NAU went on top, 28-27, with an extra-point following a Jeff lewis to Mike Alexander touchdown pass. It was Alexander's third touchdown of the day, following a 52-yard punt return and a 19-yard TD pass from Lewis. SUU got the ball back., but fell short on a fourth-and-two play, turning the ball over and setting up the clincher, a 42-yard Terry Belden field goal which gave NAU the 31-27 victory. Despite the loss, SUU's middle linebacker Jared Hunsaker received the American West Conference's first ever defensive player of the week.. Hun aker, a senior from Grantsville, UT, totaled l 7 tackles six of which were solo, and also forced a fumble and broke up a pass against the Lumberjacks. SUU's second loss came at the hands of Angelo State who pulled out an 18-16 win over Southern Utah, Sept. 11. Afrer fulling behind 15-0 in the first half the T-Birds found 1 themselves behind the eight-ball and couldn't put on a sustained drive until late in the fourth quarter when they dTOY'e the ball 74 yards for a touchdown to cut into an 18-8 deficit The drive was a just a little too little and a little too late however, as the score came with just 23 seconds remaining in the game. '.Bird wide receiver Kevin Cuthbertson made a highlight film catch to for the score, leaping into the air in the back of the end :zone and coming down with the touchdown pass from Rick Robins, despite being sandwiched between two defenders who inflicted him with a severe ankle sprain in the process. Cuthbertson, who led the Thunderbirds in receptions before sustaining the injury, is expected to return to the line-up in two to three weeks.
