Show -/ Theatre departtnent o(fers plays a century wide for year From Shaw to Shakespeare, theatregoers will marvel at span of performances for the 1993-94 season lineup From a classic comedy of the 19th century to a recent Tony winner, the 1993-94 theatre season will offer nearly a century of drama, comedy, and dance that will compliment the stage for another spectacular year. The season will begin with Brian Frid's Dancing at Lughnasa the winner of three Tony awards in 1991. lt is the story of five sisters who, tied by poverty and a lack of eduacation, barely survive on a subsistence level in their tiny Irish cottage. Despite their dire straits, they have an ecsti.tic desire to dance and dream in what has been described as •a play of people, rirual, rdigion, and the dance oflife. " Dancing at Luglmasa will be directed by Mitzi McKay, SUU dance instn.1ctor and assistant operations manager for the Uoh Shakespearean Festival. It will be the first directorial effort at SUU for McKay, who earned her master of fine ans pegree in directing. Dancing at Lug/masa will play Oct 28-30 and Nov. 4-6 in the Randall L Jones Theatre. The theatre depamnent's tradition:fl Christmas season will cdebrate the classic Babes in Ta,lan:d with music by Victor Herbert. A landmark. American musical, Babes in Ta,land is a fantasy about magical people who live in the world ofToyland, and is noted for such musical numbers as ·March of the Toys." The production will be directed by Fred C. Adams and will show Dec. 9-11 and 16-18 in the Auditorium Mainstage Theatre. The new year will begin with a special offering for SUU theatre season tick.et holders. An Et.oening of One Acts will be presented in the Auditorium Theatre Jan. 20-22. During the course of the year, a number of one act plays are produced by students in advanced directing classes.The production will feature three of the best presentations by SUU's most promising young directors. Neil Simon's Broadwa, Bound will b stiged in the Randall L Jones Theatre Feb. 3-5 and 10-11. Broadwa::1 Bm.md is a comedy about a family trying to stay together despiir the forces that seem determined to tear them apart. R. Scott Phillips will direct. •This warm view of a family snuggling to stay together will leave you laughing- and thinking- as you explore ,our own family and the influences that make it uniquely what it is," Phillips said of Broadwa:1 Bound. This year's theatre season tickets will also cover SUU's March 10-12 dance concert in the Randall LJones Theatre. Once presented every two years, the dance Ct'ilcert is now presented annually and features the combined talents of dance students, the American Folk Ballet, the Sojourners, the Waukeenyans, and the children's dance workshop. Dance routines will include everything from classical ballet, modem, flamenco, tap, ballroom and jan. One of the more entertaining shows is George Bernard Shaw's classic comedy Anru and the Man. which will show March 31, April l and 2, and 7-9. First Staged in 1894, Anru and the Man is a still modem spoof of millitary gallantry. The story revolves around the heroine of the play's discovery that the man ofhe dreams is a bumbling dunce, while the coward who runs from battle turns out to be efficient as wdl as clever. Anru and the Man will show in the Auditorium Mainstage Theatre and Richard Bugg will direct. Fred C. Adams will direct the season wrap-up, Me and M:, Gal written by L Arthur Rose and Douglas Furber with music by Nod Gay. It revolves around Bill Snibson, a cockney cut-up who inheril3 the tide and fortune of the Earl of Hereford. However, Snibson must convince the will's snooty executors of his suitibility without giving up his non-aristocratic girlfriend. Show times are at 8 p.m., with a matinee performance of each phy scheduled the second Saturday of the production.
