| Show provo frn mining man refuses nomination for governor at hands of utah democrats in letter to democratic committee mr knight declines to make the race and committee select another ran didace salt lake city jesse knight ol 01 provo nominated at the state democratic convention at logan as their candidate for governor has writ ten a letter to the democratic state committee positively declining to make the race mr knights declination will be referred to he new corn cittee selected at logan and a selection will be made by the commit tee ot a candidate to take the place of mr knight mr knights letter to chairman martineau Martl neau is as follows provo utah sept 25 1908 to the democratic state committee hon L R martineau chairman salt lake city utah gentlemen at the democratic state convention recent ly held at logan utah I 1 was so I 1 am informed nominated for governor of the state of utah I 1 hereby notify yo i that I 1 cannot accept such nomination and hereby decline the same and respectfully di elect lect that my name be not placed upon the democratic state hicl et you will therefore select some other name to take the place of mine my reasons for this action have been fully stated by me and discussed in all the newspapers of the state and need not be further expressed I 1 will say however that I 1 find the duties of tha office would require my whole attention and owing to my age I 1 have not the time nor the strength to give to the tion my mining interests are in such condition as to demand my closest attention and I 1 feel it a duty to my self and thousands of friends who have invested their money in mining propositions under my management to give these companies my personal attention from the commencement I 1 have insisted to all my friends that I 1 could rot accept the nomination and to none have I 1 ever said that I 1 would ac capt and most of my intimate friends promised that they would not me into the position where I 1 would be embarrassed and have to refuse As I 1 have said before I 1 feel that I 1 can do more good tor the state of utah and her people as a private catl zen than I 1 could do as governor of the state my only desire is to be left to work out my own plans to work for the building up of the inter ests of the state not as a public of fleer but as a private citizen I 1 have tried to show my faith in utah and her people by my works please et me do so in the future as a citizen who loves the state and not as a pub lie officer ever desiring the success of the democratic party in the slate and nation I 1 am most respectfully KNIGHT |
