Show UNIVERSITY JOURNAL SPORTS !PAGE 18 MONDAY, APRIL 10, 1000 I 'Birds to tee off Monday Southern Utah's golf team travels to Phoenix for the Grand Canyon/Thunderbird Invitational today and tomorrow. It is1he third stop on SUU's spring 2000 schedule, following tournaments hosted by Portland State and San Diego. Last year SUU finished 16th of 18 with a young team which shot itself out of contention by following an opening-round 305 with a 316 in the second round. Aaron Hansen finished in a tie for 36th at 11-over par 227 to pace the 'Birds. "We expect a significant improvement over last year's finish." SUU Coach Richard Church said. "We had some inexperienced players last year who all have another year of college play under their belts now. We just want to keep improving, improving our play and hopefully our finishes." · If recent performance is any indication, Church may be happy with the outcome. The 'Birds finished 13th at last year's San Diego Invitational and improved to sixth this year (March 19-20). Grand Canyon won last year's tournament by 15 strokes over secondplace San Diego after shooting a threeround total of 869. Hansen shot 73 in the final round at San Diego (March 20), his best round of the season. Tyler Barlow shot 71 at San Diego, tying his best round of the 19992000 campaign; he also shot 71 last fall at New Mexico State's Herb Wimberly/ Coca Cola Classic. Barlow passed Dave Laughton and moved back atop the SUU stroke-average board after leading SUU with a plus-12 228 at USO; Laughton shot 237 to see his average move from 74.0 to 75.1 while Barlow inched up from 74.6 to 74.9, following the GCU tourney SUU plays at least twice more this spring, at BYU's Cougar Classic (April 21-22) and at the Mid-Con Championships at Casa Blanca Golf Cluh 1n Mesquite, Nev. (April 24-25); the Casa Blanca also hosted the Mid-Con tourney last year. SUU could add another tournament. the NCAA Championships, should it win the Mid-Con and grab the league's automatic bid. Football signs five more SUU has inked five more players to football National Letters of Intent. Included in the group are two Utah preps. one Nevada prep and two junior college athletes. Miles Virgil, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound offensive center from Clearfield High; Lee Chart, a 6-1 , 280-pound offensive lineman from Park City HS and Steve Price, a 5-9, 170-pound defensive back/slotback from Las Vegas' Cimarron High are the prep recruits. Joe Young, a 6-2 , 260-pound defensive lineman from Mesa (Ariz.) CC and Joe Langi, a 5-11 , 305-pound defensive lineman from Grossmont (Calif.) JC are the junior college players the Thunderbirds signed. The signings bring the number of spring signees by the 'Birds to 17, 20 overall including December's three signings.
