Show ,, u N I V E R s I V Name change approved by Trustees BY KEVIN M. HARING OF THE JOURNAL STAFF Administrative name changes and tenure and rank advancement of faculty were among some of the topics discussed at the monthly Board of Trustees meeting held Friday. The Board approved proposals by the Academic and Student Affairs Committee to change the name of the Division of Continuing Education to the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Also, the responsibility of distance learning would be changed from the Library to the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. If approved by the Board of Regents, these changes become effective July 1. "This change recognizes an expanded function in the delivery of instruction as well as providing courses to non-traditional learners off-campus and through distance technologies," Ray Reutzel, SUU provost explained. "Also, as a separate function, this school will receive and process graduate applications in coordination with the Admissions Office." With last month's approval to move the department of communication from the College of Business. Technology, and Communication to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Board unanimously approved to change the name to the College of Business and Technology, but only for a period of one year, as another name change is anticipated. The trustees also approved a proposal to change the name of the department of business to the School of Business. The change was necessary because nationally most business programs like SUU are schools of business, providing a unified identity, a naming opportunity for a major donor, and a focus for business curricula as accredited by the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business. In other items of business, the Board approved a line of responsibility change to make the College of Visual and Performing Arts responsible, instead of the Library, for the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery. Also, the American Folk Ballet was donated as a corporate entity to SUU. The trustees approved acceptance of the donation and the proposal to locate the ballet within the College of Visual and Performing Arts. Other reports from the committee announced that Director of School Relations Sandra Lord will be leaving SUU to pursue a doctoral degree ai UNLV. Also, Lord will be married in early May. Current SUUSA President Kris Olsen was named as the new director of school relations. The process for Jjrioritizing academic programs was discussed. The proc~ss will move from department to -department beginning .this month with the departments of business and physical science. Reutzel suggested the whole process eould take up to a year. The Board approved the last items of action, including a 4.98 percent increase in the meal plan .for Juniper Hall residents, the bestowal of tenure to seven faculty members and rank advancements to nine faculty members. 1• |
