BY JASEN ASAY JOURNAL SPORTS EDITOR SUU's women's tennis team continued its great conference play by going 2-1 this weekend improving its Mid-Continent Conference record to 6-2 and 8-5 overall. The Thunderbirds defeated Chicago State 5-1 Friday and Valparaiso 5-1 in the early match Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon, the 'Birds were beat by undefeated Western Illinois 6-1 . The only doubles played in the three matches were against WIU where the 'Birds won one of three sets. Ashlee Berge and Melinda Francom won their set 8-6. Francom was the only 'Bird to win her match against WIU. Francom also topped Valpo's Sarah Engelbert 6-4, 6-2. Kendra Gleason came into the weekend with eight straight singles wins. The streak was extended to 10 before Gleason lost to WIU's Selma Kurtagil 6-4 , 6- 1. Berge won two of her three matches. Track team wins at UNLV Softball drops BY TYLER JOHNSON SENIOR STAFF WRITER The men's track and field team won the UNLV Invitational Saturday, beating Western State by 38 points. The women tracksters and the athletes at Weber State won several events as well. Many personal records were broken. The men (157.5 points) beat Western State (119.5) and Brigham Young (75) ~t UNLV. Head Coach Eric Houle said he was excited to see the men beat BYU. "We split our team·and were still able to beat [BYUJ. It was a really good weekend for us," Houle said. The women (53.5 points) lost to UNLV (171), Idaho (165), Brigham Young (107.5) and CSU Dominguez Hills (56), but beat Western State (25) at UNLV. Junior Teresa Rice broke the school record in the 1,500-meter with a time of 4:27.15. Rice was the first to cross the line for this event. Sophomore James Finks won the 400-meter and broke the record set in 1977 by Manuel Deason with his time of 47.20. At the last meet. Finks fell .02 seconds shy of the record. At Weber State, Junior Anna Bullock won the discus with her throw of 153-4. Bullock also placed fourth in the hammer with a throw of 151-4. Junior Curtis Moore won the 5,000-meter with his • time of 14.39.93. Junior Adam Brown placed third in the 800-meter, crossing the line in 1 :52.10. Junior Mark Wright placed third in both the second section of the 800-meter (1:55.76) and in the 1,500-meter (3:55.15). In Las Vegas, sophomore Taurus Jackson won both the 100-meter (10.87) and the 200-meter (22.35) events, Sophomore Kyle Rowley broke his personal record by more than two feet, and won the javelin with a mark of 214-05. Sophomore Rick Bush won both the 110-meter high hurdles (15.01 ) and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (54.70) . Sophomore Nate Imamura (15.21 ) placed second and sophomore John Dilley (15.26) placed third. Dilley also placed third in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles with his time of 57.96. The men's 4x400-meter relay team won its event with a time of 3:24.25. The women's 4x400 team placed second with a time of 3:54.31 . Freshman Jeff Day had a good meet. He won the pole vault with a height of 14-06. He also placed third in the long jump with a distance of 20 feet. SUU dominated the shot put event. Freshman Troy Ford won the shot put with a mark of 52 feet. Senior Gjaison White placed second with a mark of 50-08.25. White also won the discus with a mark of 140-07 and Ford placed third with a mark of 123-09. White came in third in the hammer with a mark of 130'-05. Freshman Dustin Hudspeth continues to run well in his first year competing at the college level. At this meet he took second place in the 5,000-meter with his time of 15:59.77. Freshman Kelly Snodgress placed third in both the 400-meter (56.15) and in the 800-meter (2:15.56). Junior Heidi Duncan placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1 :06.19. Sophomore Stephanie Garr placed third in the pole vault with a height of 10-11 .75. Freshman Chuck Hackenheimer placed third in the 1,500-meter with a time of 4:05.7 4. The Thunderbirds and Westerwinds met on Saturday for a two-game set, with SUU dropping both games 3-1 and 5-0. In the third inning of the opening game, WIU scored when Jennifer Tyrell singled to center field to drive home Kelly Johnson. WIU's Bridget Maxwell walked with the bases loaded to bring the score to 2-0. Then WIU's Shannon Goebel stretched the lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly, bringing Tyrell home. The 'Birds were trailing 3-0 in the sixth inning when Wendy Haramoto scored on an error. This broke WIU's Holly Killian's scoreless inning streak at 37. Renee Hietbrink took the loss, falling to 1-18 for the year. In the nightcap, SUU's Lori Shephard dominated on the mound until the eighth inning, when the Westerwinds piled on five runs off four hits and two errors. There were no earned runs in the game. WIU's Chrissie Beebe broke the scoring drought when she singled to center field, driving home Dani Hofmann. Goebel then singled down the left field line to advance Beebe home. Alicia Kelly effectively ended the game with a three-run homer to right field. Shephard drops to 3-13 on the season. · With the two losses, SUU falls to 4-31 , 1-6 in Mid-Con play. The team returns to Cedar City for seven straight · home games. starting off with a double header against UNLV Tuesday.
