"This year will be our best year ever, without question, for both teams," said Winn, a sophomore at SUU. With four years of assistant coaching at Timpview High in Provo, and proven determination in managing both T-Bird squads, Winn is qualified for the position. Also qualified for their positions are junior Andy Burke and sophomore Ryan Angell , who should both create some excitement at their midfield positions. Additionally, sophomores Josh and John Carver, and Winn himself will give fans a reason to show up for the games. On the women's side, a mixture of local talent and transfers has given Winn great hopes this year. In stark contrast to last year's aspirations, Winn has already predicted victory in the women's opener, Sept. 14 at Snow College. "I'll go on record as saying we're going to kick their butts," said Winn. All this optimism comes despite an uneven playing field. Both squads at SUU are "club teams· which puts them closer to intramural in terms of priority and attention . Practices take place at South Elementary and games will be played on the Cedar High School field. But the talent here will be nothing like that of intramurals. SUU faces opponents with familiar names like Weber State, Utah State, Idaho State and Ricks College. The men's team has already started their season, they lost to UVS.C 1-0 on Aug. 28. The team showed they have talent, and now need to work more as a team. SUU started off slow, but came to life in the second half. That's when the 'Birds dominated , almost scoring on many different attacks. The men's teams will play two home games this weekend . Dixie College comes to town on Friday at 6 p.m. and Community College of Southern Nevada will be here on Saturday at 10 a.m. Both games should be exciting to watch since Dixie is one of SUU's rivals, and CCSN is always a power in the league. The women play at Dixie on Friday, Sept. 17, before both teams go to war again the next day in Cedar City on Saturday, Sept. 18, at-2 p.m. Both teams are working toward being sanctioned by SUU. With more money added to the sport, the players say they think the level of play will rise. But for now, the teams are clubs. The players play for the pure thrill of the game. As junior T.J. Jensen put it, "We'll succeed because we all love soccer. Our potential is unlimited ." Don't be duped b~ 'c:Jiscounters~ Blinded by textbook •discounts· frqm giant online companies?
