Nicole Bingham (Business, Technology and Communication) at Tuesday's SUUSA Senate meeting. This statement was made in response to the debate over bill #003-99, which requested the allocation of $1 ,725 to Power 9.1FM for new equipment. Last week, when the bill was introduced, the rules were suspended for two minutes to allow a representative from the radio station to answer the senate's questions. When the rules were re-instated, Sen. Cody T. Wilson (Science) requested two'more equipment bids from Power 91FM. In Tuesday's open forum , Cal Rollins, station manager for Power 91 FM, spoke in behalf of the radio club, but . did not have the requested bids. In an effort to help raise funds, the radio club will sponsor a Midnight Movie fundraiser to help cover the cost of new equipment. The motion to table the bill for two weeks for further investigation passed with a vote of 13-2. In other old business, resolution #003-99, sponsored by senators Tiana Tew (Humanities and Social Sciences), Natalie Richardson (SCI), Kari Ann Sewell (BTC), Steve Nelson (Education) and Nathan Hancock (Performing and Visual Arts) , outlined a philosophy for investigative procedures for all members of the senate. Its purpose is-to alleviate confusion and more effectively administer to the needs and protection of students. "We are here to help the people who can't get help other ways," said Steve Nelson. The resolution passed 10-5. Bill #002-99 requested that $1 ,300 be allocated to the College of Business, Technology and Communication for activities held during its week in October. BTC senators Bingham, Sewell and Sen. Mike Wankier sponsored the bill and clearly outlined all spending in a budget causing little debate between senators. The bill passed unanimously. EDU senators Kim Perea, Gena Nelson and Steve Nelson sponsored bill #004-99. It requested that $75 be allocated to each legislative aid per semester (a total of $750) to compensate for their time and effort. "It's wise that we allocate the same amount to each of our legislative aides," said Perea. The bill was called to question with a vote of 14-1 , and passed unanimously. In new business, PVA senators Hancock, Tara Nicole Oliver and Sara Parson sponsored bill #005-99. This bill requested the allocation of $1 ,000 to compensate the members of SUU's pep band for their time and contribution to the university. Hancock said, "SUU is the only university in the state that doesn't compensate its pep band." Bill #006-99, sponsored by Tew and G. Nelson, requested that $100 be allocated to each college for the purpose of an administrative expense account. "This is for the things that come up. What we don't use will go back into the senate account," sa10 Tew. "It would be wise to pass this now so we can focus on other things in the future,· said G. Nelson. Stephanie Kukic (HSS) sponsored the Orders of the Day, a parliamentary procedure for how the senate operates. ' All new business unanimously passed to be circled and posted for one week outside the SUUSA offices. At last week's senate meeting, the senate unanimously approved a recommendation from President Kristian Olsen to appoint Josh Jones as SUUSA's chief justice for the 1999-2000. All senators attended the first meeting with the exception of Kukic. '' ....- ' \. |
