Show !THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 , 1999 Dancer to lecture for Convocation today The status and future of dance will be surveyed by Murray Louis, considered by many to be one of the world's great male dancers and choreographers, today for the Convocation series. Louis, artistic director of the Murray Louis and Nikolais Dance Company, based in New York City, will speak at 11 :30 a.m. in the Auditorium. His address is titled "Dance at the Millennium." In addition to a storied career as a dancer, Louis is regarded as a uniquely gifted choreographer, teacher, and an eloquent spokesman for the art of dance, according to Neal Cox, director of the convocations program. "Mr. Louis' body of work has been lauded both for his exacting command of an immense artistic range and for the perception, intelligence, and wit he brings to his art,· Cox said. Louis has created over 100 works, toured worldwide, and performed in every state in the lJ.S. He has choreographed to the music of many of the world's great composers, and a variety of composers have created music for him. "His reputation as a master of the language of dance grew as he developed an eclectic, poetic, and skillfully articulate choreographic style,· Cox s;3id. Dances choreographed by Louis include numbers for the Royal Danish Ballet, the Jose Limon Company, the Hamburg Opera Ballet, the Scottish Ballet, the Berlin Opera Ballet, the PAGES UNIV,RSITY JOURNAL CAMPUS NEWS Cleveland Ballet, and for many other companies in the United States and Canada. It was while Louis was attending a summer session at Colorado College in the mid-1940s that he met Alwin Nikolais, and the start of what was to become a dynamic team which would have a major influence on dance took shape. As associate director to Nikolais at what became the Nikolais Dance Theater, Louis became a driving force in the evolution of the aesthetic and pedagogic theory which is now known as the Nikolais/Louis technique. Other highlights in Louis' career include the 1953 founding of the Murray Louis Dance Company and the 1968 selection of the company to represent the State Department on a tour of India which led to subsequent extensive domestic and ·international tours which established the company as a major force in the world of dance. In 1978 Louis created works for Rudolph Nureyev to premiere on Broadway and danced opposite Nureyev in a program he especially created for his dance company. Louis has worked extensively creating and adapting dance for television in the U.S. and Europe. His work also includes a collection of published essays, "Inside Dance;· a five part film series, "Dance as an Art Form;" and a five part video series, "The World of Alwin Nikolais.• Do you love your Mother ·E arth?
