SUU didn't lose a single game to the Oaks, winning every set 6-0. "It was exciting for the team to get a win," said SUU Coach Lenny Lee. "They've been working hard to get better and it was nice to see them get rewarded for their efforts. We have some players that are really developing and finding out what they need to do to play at this level. That's all I can ask for at tbis point. Developing a program at the Division I level takes time in any sport and we're heading in the right direction." On Saturday, Syd Manning picked up a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win over Sacramento State's Susha Wright in the third singles match, but the Hornets defeated SUU 81 in the first American West Conference dual match.for both teams. Windy Vining extended CSUS's Jill Butler to three sets iq the #1 singles match before fa lling 4-6, 6-4, 4-6. SUU's Deb Budge also took her Hornet opponent, Selena Long, to three sets before losing. After the Sac. State match, the Thunderbirds traveled to Santa Clara for their second match of the day - a neutral site encounter with the University of Portland. The Pilots took advantage of what Lee called a "very tired" Thunderbird team and won 5-0. In fact, SUU's fatigue resulted in the suspension of all three doubles matches and one singles match. The Pilots won all five singles matches that were completed, thus making the four incomplete matches unnecessary to determine the team winner. Rather than run the players into the ground, Lee and Pilot coach Susie Campbell terminated the final four matches. On Sunday, SUU's Janelle Hughes extended SCU's Erin Barry to three sets, but fell 6-2, 3-6, 2-6 and that was the Thunderbirds' lone bright spot in a 0-8 defeat. The loss dropped SUU's season mark to 1-10. The team gets a couple of days at home before returning to California for AWC matches vs. CS-Northridge on Friday and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Sunday. The 'Birds then travel to Ogden, Utah, for last regular season match vs. Weber State on Tuesday. April 20-23 will mark the first-ever American West Conference Championships in Northridge. SUU's win over Menlo gave Lee his 101st career coaching win. Lee, a graduate of Temple University, took the reins of the SUU program at its 1994 inception after serving as one of the directors for the Stanford Tennis Camps in California. He's had previous coaching stints at Trenton State College (N.J.), Eastern College (Pa.) and Montgomery County Community College (Pal. Lee's career record now stands at 101-60.
