Review by JENNIFER DURCAN America's representative to the World Amateur Ballroom Dancesport Championships the past two years has begun her professional teaching career in southern Utah. Melissa Hale Jewkes, the 1993-94 United States Amateur champion in Latin American ballroom dance, recently relocated to Cedar City and will begin teaching in the SUU Continuing Education Department on a freelance basis. Jewkes and her partner, Rick Robinson of Provo, Utah, were the United States' representatives to the 1993 and 1994 World Championships in Scotland and Switzerland, respectively. As a member of the BYU team, Jewkes toured throughout Asia, Russia, Europe and the United States and was a member of teams that claimed three United States Formation championships and one British Formation championship. At BYU, Jewkes majored in dance with a ballroom emphasis and earned certification at the Gold Bar level in both ballroom and Latin styles. She has directed and choreographed for two formation teams at BYU and several youth teams throughout Utah and Idaho. In addition to teaching in the continuing education department at SUU, Jewkes is available to coach individual couples, small groups and youth teams. Jewkes can be reached through SUU at 586-1994.
