Show Dominated meet Royals sweep Region By Keith Duncan Coach Jim Maw and his Royal tracksters com- sports year the best plimented the i uceessful 1975-7how in knew the Region One capturing way they track and field title last Thursday at Weber State College. Roy was given too much of a meet by anyone as the Royals rolled up 150 points to second place Bonneville's 107'. Skyview was a distant third with Box Elder 66, Logan 37, 93 points, Weber had 721 and Bear River 1 point. Coach Maw and his assistant, assistant, Coach Arvol Smith were elated over the smashing victory but are cautious as they enter the state track and lield meet this Friday and Saturday at Weber State. Roy will be sending 12 track and field hopefuls to the coveted state meet. Two region records fell in the meet andx the Royaals were responsible for their fall in one way or another. The Royals continued to show their disap 6 pointment in the pole vault as no Roy athlete could finish amoung the top six. Mark Howes, a junior high jumper for Roy, suffered an injury just before the region meet and had to settle for a jump and fifth place. Howes holds the school record in this event at Confident, brilliant, and lightning quick, Bruce Lyman captured first place in both the 120 high hurdles and 330 Intermediates Hurdles race. Bruce is just too difficult to describe but one thing is for sure, he has yet to beaten in the 330 intermediates race by anyone in the state. Lyman ran a 14.88 in the 120 highs and a 39.13 in the intermediates which will stand as a new region record since it is tracks newest event this season. Carl Bastian zoomed to a 9.9 in the 100 yeard dash and placed first. Bastian will be a strong threat to win the state title if he can Seattle down to the big meet atmosphere. Mike McCoy, the Royal senior, finished second in the 100 yard dash. Kurt Bennington, just a sophomore, was the sixth 6-- 0 6-- multi-talente- d 1 Track Crown place finisher in the 100 yard dash with a 10.44 time. Mike Fosmark didnt heave the shot past the fifty foot mark but it was enough for him to take first place amoung fellow Region One putters, kevin region. Mike McCoy is steadily narrowing in on his third in the long jump event. Mike had a jump of 22-- 2 feet to win the event. He set a nev region record in the process, best Kim Coombs mark by more than a half a foot. straight state championship Thompson of Roy finished second, and junior Mike Storey finished sixth. Greg Panfiloff busted the Region One record in the javelin with a 198-- throw, this toss bested the old region record by more than 12 feet and Gregs throw is about the third best in the stae this year. Junior Layne Olsen threw the spear some feet to take third place. Cross Country star Nick Wilson put it all together to take third in the mile run with a 4:47.25 time. Roys 440 relay captured first place and set a new school record in the process. Carl Bastian, Kurt Bennington, Mike McCoy, and Bruce Lyman were members of that team. The recorded a 43.70 time. Doug Porter has come on brilliantly in the latter stage of the seasons and he took third in the 440 yard dash with Gary Hufstettler finishing sixth in the Dale Lyman, Bruces younger sophomore brother finifhed fifth in the 330 intermediate race so things could get to be pretty interesting come his senior season. Roys medlay team finished sixth in Region One. Greg Panfiloff finished second in the discus event, just behind Kenton Johns of Bonneville. Mike Fosmark was third and Kevin Thompson was fourth. Bastian finished second in the 220 yard dash event with a 22.1 clocking. Bennington was fifth with a 23.15 time. NINE OF THE ROYALS CARL BASTIAN sparkling to captured the Region One 100 yard dash championship with a 9.9 clocking. r) Royals were convincing in claiming 1976 Mle by Lynn Arave Roy High Schools Superstar quartet of Bruce Lyman, Mike McCoy, Carl Bastian and Greg Panfiloff combined to w in seven events between them last Thursday in Weber States Wildcat Stadium and power the Royals to the 1976 Region One Track and Field Title. Roy amassed 150 points to outdistance runnerup Bonneville filigh by nearly 43 points and claim the championship. The Lakers had 1071 points while Sky View totaled 93 to take j third place. Other team scores were: 4) Weber 72 'j: 5) Box Elder 66; 6) Logan 37; and 7) Bear River 1 point. The Royals were superb to say the leastscoring points in every event, except the pole vault and 880 yard run. All together, Roy won eight first places, four seconds and set four new meet recortds on route to dethroning Bonneville High and becoming the new champions ol Region One Track. The Championship was Roys second Region one title this schoo year ( Roy won the lootball title last fall) and its 7th Region Track crow n during its eleven year history. In Royals enter State fact, Roy has now copped five of the last seven Region One Track and Field Championships. Senior Bruce Lyman was certainly the Royals most valuable trackster by virtue of his two individual first places and two winning anchor-lerelay runs during the meet. Lyman won the 120 yard high Region hurdles by over five yards, clocking a time of 14.88 second in both the finals and trials. Later he came back to outrun the field and win the 330 yard intermediate hurdles in 39.13. That time will be the region record since the event is new this year. Lyman also anchored Roys two winning relay teams the 440 and mile relay squads. g con-sista- and also heaving the 12 pound iron ball placed third in the discus. Bonneville- - Highs Young contingent of tracksters made their mark in the meet with four first place finishes. The Lakers all around ace, Jeff Swanger to win the high jump in addition to cleared his third place in the long jump and 4th in the 330 hurdles. Bonnevilles Big Kenton Joh won the discus w hile Ken Vigil and Carl Anderson at 148-1won gutty races to win the 880 and mile runs. and Vigil times 2:05.8 to win the half-milAnderson clocked 4:41.80 to win the mile. He also placed a strong second in the 100 yard dash and his brilliant relay leg in the 440 certainly helped Roy set a new standard there. Speedster Carl Bastian clocked 9.90 seconds to win the 100 yard dash, but was overhauled by Box Elders Ken Broadbent in the final stages of the 220 yard dash and ended up a commendable second. Bastian also ran on Roys two winning relay teams. Greg Panfiloff surely raised some eyebrows with his startling 198-javelin throw to win the event and set a new region one and Roy High record. Panfiloff also took 2nd in the discus throw. Mike Fosmark of Roy won the shot put by 4 Lynn Arave High, a no surprise winner in the Region One Track and Field Meet one week ago. will compete this weekend as a top entrant in the State high school track meet at Weber State College. The meet begins Friday at 2 p m. with trails and at 9 a in. on Saturday morning with more trials. Highlight of the meet is the linal events which commence Saturday at 12:50 p.m. The cream of Utah's high sel on! track and field crop will compete in this final meet since the tope three linishers in each event at B Roy 4-- respective region automatically to meets gain entrance participate. Provo High is undoubtably the meet favorite, while in addition to Roy; Skyline, West, Olympus and Hillcresl could rate the winners circle. Roy will rely heavily on Mike McCoy-thdefending two time state long jump champ, Carl Bastian, Bruce Lyman and Greg Panfiloff to score the bulk of its points. With so many schools and athletes competing in the e state meet, traditionally upsets are a regular portion of the menu. Way back in 1967, Roy scored a big upset by placing second at the state track meet. Also, Royal fans will remember how in 1974 Roy barely placed second at the Region One track meet, but went on to rally and place third in the state track meet. Bonneville is the defending class track champion and will place all of its hopes on Jeff Swanger in the jumps and hurdles as well as on miler Carl Anderson and weightman Kenton Johns in the discus. 4-- Roy banquet set The annual Roy High athletic banquet was staged last Wednesday night at Roy High. In this special athlete was chosen and banquet, the top 1975-7presented a gold watch from sportswriters from the Standard Examiner. Many other numerous athletic awards were handed out including the top senior athlete as well as the overall MVP. Each head coach and his assistants were present to give out huge trophies to the MVP performers, letters were given to the athletes so they could continue to stockpile the letter on their letterman 6 jackets.
