Show I Beat Bonneville Q SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS By Keith Duncan This is the year of the Royal, proclaimed Coach Fred Thompson after his Roy High crew had disposed of the Bonneville Lakers last Tuesday state night to advance into the 1976 baseball playoffs. That statement cant be taken lightly for the Royals will have now represented their school in each of the football, at spring football Team captains for the 1976 Roy High football season have been voted upon recently and Coach Ernest Jacklin is elated to report that Mike Storey, Jim McMahon, Mark Kartchner, and Layne Olsen will all serve as captains of the upcoming grid iron team. The Royals enjoyed probably their most successful season ever in football last fall, in winning the Region One title for the first time in the schools history. They waltzed through the regular season schedule undefeated and hardly even touched. The 1975 squad was described by many as the most talented group of athletes ever assembled in the history of the school. If it wasnt Big Mike Fosmark on the line, then in it was Kevin Thompson, or even a Bobby Bell, Greg Mike McCoy rushed for more than 1000 yards and is headed to Taah State next season to begin what could be a four year success era. The team made the state playoffs and they rallied to defeat Skyline in the first game. The season came a crushing halt with a shelling from the Bountiful Braves. All these fond memories must be set aside because its almost time agai to think about another football campaign. Pan-filof- 1 f. 976 schedule similar Roy will open the 1976 season with an August 27 clash with the Bountiful Braves at Bountiful. On September 3, Ben Lomond comes to Roy. Roy opens the Region One schedule with a typical dogfight with the Skyview Bobcats in Smithfield on September 10. Logan travels to Roy on September 17. The Royals will try to duplicate their 50-- 0 shut out of Bear River on September 24. On October 1, Roy travels to Bonneville for annual battle. Oct. 6 will be the start of the UEA weekend and Roy is scheduled to play Judge Memorial. On October 14, Box Elder comes down from Brigham City to tangle with the Royals. To wrap up the league schedule, Weber will be hosted by the Royals on October 22. Stats released Immediately aater Tuesdays game with the Bonneville Lakers at home, Coach Fred Thompson had his wife in his arms and was being congradulated for guiding his team to a coveted playoff in the state tournament which begins next week. Three hours later he was at home with statistic compiled to the exact batting average. In final batting stats released, Jerry Ward ended up with 29 turns aat bat, Claude Payne 31, Greg Panfiloff 10, Jim McMahon 34, Greg Nichols 43, Orlando Gallegos 41, Pat Hanley 5, Rick Stonehocker 39, Clair Davis 17, Mike McCoy 32, Kurt Bennington 18, Craig Hansen 17, and Kenny Francis with 5. Looking across the runs scored tabulation, Ward had 4, Payne 5, Panfiloff 2, McMahon 9, Nichols 8, Gallegos 8, Stonehocker 6, Davis 4, McCoy 9, Hansen 1 and Francis 1. In number of hits, Ward ended up with 6, Payne 11, McMahon 7, Nichols 10, Gallegos 15, Stonehocker 11, Davis 4, McCoy 5, Bennington 1, Hansen 3, and Francis 1. In stolen bases, Bennion had 1, McMahon 2, Nichols 3, Gallegos 2, Stonehocker 1, Davis 1, McCoy 10, Bennington 4, and Hansenl. Complete pitching stats had yet to be released, but stats on the past three games were available. Jim McMahon last Tuesday, threw 78 percent strikes. He had 67 strikes, 19 balls, and a low total of 86 total pitches. He struck down 12 Laker batters to go along with the 11 batters he Kd against Weber. McMahon yielded one base on balls, but gave up just three hits. He yielded two runs, and had 4 errors committed behind him. He went the complete in Region One baseball distance and now stands 2 Roy gains 4-- Glance 5-- basketball, wrestling, baseball, nd track state playoffs and meets. More meaningful for the Roy team is that they captured a region title on their galliant trek. Rick Stonehocker belted a crucial three run blast in the fifth inning to sew up the victory for the Royals. Ricks shot cleared the 326 foot mark on the cement wall on the left field baseline. Controversy flared shortly after the key Roy blast which gave the Royals a 1 lead at the time and put them just six outs away from clinching a playoff spot to the coveted state playoffs to be held next week at the Ken Price Park and Dirks Field. Coach Steve Gardner of the visiting Bonneville Lakers was up in a flash protesting the call, as was his assistant. Before the little fifth inning frenzt was complete, Coach Gardner and his assistant had been booted from the game. Coac Thompson of Roy stated of the call, Everybody in attendance had a different poinion of whether the ball was hit foul or fair. One thing is for sure though, once that umpire makes his decision, the call if final and should have been a call he thought was just. Coach Gardner and I are good friends and I think I would have done the same protesting if it had of been me on the shortend of the score. Coach Thompson went on further to state, One thing is for usre, we are in the state tournament finally and these kids deserved every moment leading to it and those moments that are in store. Coach Thompsons wife, was quick to state after the game, The players were like small kids at the candy store with their eyes wide open and undoubtedly anixous over something. It makes it all worth while for Fred and those kids, to attend the state tournament and enjoy what they have been hoping for all season long. Fred knows what the feeling is, because he has been fore. Now ie is doing everythin in his power to give those kids a bit of the feeling back. Thompson realized even later, A mojority of these kids havent even experienced the joy of playing on a plush professional diamond with a clean cut infield, staying in a dugout, and knowing people are buyins while they watch you. Its a great feeling. First State Berth For Thompson Thompson is only in his second season as head coach of the Royalcoach of the Royal baseball crew and this will be his first trip as a coach to the state baseball playoffs. 5-- State playoff berth Instead of thinking of h imself, Coach Thompson is quick at every chance he gets to praise the kids who have made the season possible. He, along with the team are striving for something that the entire team can always be proud of. Were all glad now that we will be able to get a chance to play in Dirks field and play with seven more of the best eight baseball teams in the state. I feel as we enter the state tournament, we are solid at every position, especially on the mound. The pitching playoff scetch, with any one loss capable of knocking us out of the state playoff picture. Royals Come Up With Timely Hits For the third consecutive contest, Roy has been on the victorious side for several good reasons, but none more important than the teams ability to come up with the timely hits. Roy came up with just fiv3 hits, but they used four of those hits to build accountable runs. Stonehocker homers out; ushers Royals in -- In the following inning, Roy put the game away with four runs. Jerry Ward earned base on a single, he was sacrified to second and scored from third base later on a passed ball. With the Royals up and still in the fifth, Mike McCoy walked and stole second base. Nichols slashed out another hit to leave men on at third and 2-- second. Rich Stonehocker comes to bat Gary Tracey feed him a high inside fastball. It was meet, said Stonehocker of the three run home run blast over the lewft field wall. i Coach Thompsqn concluded by saying, Its a tremendous feeling to be able to play with the most elite in the st&tfe. team Entered the final; weeks of play ,I began to reflect back bri last year when we so close to a playoff spot. All we had to do was to beat Box As-'ct- ' Elder. And here we were again, a win over the Lakers would assure us of a place in state. I believe the difference has been in the kids and the 12 game JERRY WARD stepped into the starting lineup as Roy's catcher when Mark Kartchner sustained an injury. Since then Coach Fred Thompson couldn't be happier with the past schedule we play. This region has been helping each other and in a few short years, we could have a pretty strong set up here in the north. performances. Budke, Panfiloff combine to beat Beating Skyview 0 was probably the Roy Royals most crucial victory on its march toward a coveted playoff spot and a possible Region One championship. This occurence took place last Friday in Cashe Valley and the setting was rare, a scene usually not portrayed by the hustling Bobcats. Last Tuesday, Roy was to play host to the Bonneville Lakers for a possible playfoff spot. Coach Fred Thompson 8-- had explaiined that getting his kids up for a game with Skyview was more difficult than getting the players enthused for a match with rival Bonneville. We had a good little chat on the way to Skyview, said Coach Thompson, This team really wants to go state, probably more than most other teams in this region and that is why they are in the position they are in. A peculiar point to bring across is that the Bobcats were minus all but two seniors. This was due mainly to the fact that Skyview coaches were forced to kick almost every senior because of rules being broken by the team members. I was really surprised to hear this, said Coach Thompson, Usually Skyview kids are known for not getting into trouble and are generally an agreeing bunch when it comes to sports. Mike Budke, a junior Riy hurler, who had been suspended from the Royal baseball team about a six weeks ago, had slowly begun to work himself back into the varsity picture before getting the call to start against Skyview. Budke pitched a full five innings in a starting role and completely amazed everyone but himself in giving up only one hit and not allowiing a He was single run. - Roy meets Granger state Roy will enter the Class baseball tournament next Monday at Ken Price Park, with a 5:30 clash with the Granger Lancers of Region Four. Granger will enter as champions of Region Four. Other teams involved in this seasons state tournament are Hillcrest of Region Four, Granite of Region Three, West of Region Three, Clearfield and Bountiful of Region Two, Box Elder of Region One, and one more team still undecided from Region Three at the time of this writing. On Wednesday May 19, Roy will play their second game of trounament in either the winners or losers bracket. Coach Fred Thompson was still undecided who he would use as a starting pitcher against Granger last Tuesday night. He speculated that he might go with Jim McMahon and( possibly, Mike Budke. sudde- n-death 5-- 1 play- Coach Thompson states that he would and surely like eight or nine hits a game contest each in it might take that many in state. Jim McMahon, who was the same hurler that Bonneville faced in the first round, yielded only three hits, but they were scattered. Jim said of his Tuesday performance, I wasnt all that pleased with my pitching. I realize we will be needing some good pitching in state. These powerful Salt Laker schools are not going to knock me out of it as of yet. Coach Thompson commented the Tuesday performance was Jims best performance by statistics in the seasons length. Jimmy pitched a smart ball game, the martest of all season. He struck out 78 percent of the Lakers he faced, totalling 12 for the game. Jim threw the less amount of pitches that he has ever throw in the past, 86. But probably the most distinct thing about the entire performance, is that Jim didnt let the errors behind hime hinder his pitching in anyway. Nichols pounds Out Two Hits Coach Thompson was commenting the other day that Greg Nichols doesnt strike out all that often. In 40 trips to the plate, previous than the Bonneville game, Nichols had struck out only twicce. With Bonnevill up a run in the bottom of the fourth, Nichols led off with sa single, Stonehocker sacrified Greg beautifully to second, and Jim McMahon brought home Nichols with a long-hi- t sacrifice fly. has been consistent. In the last month of baseball we have been playing a 4-- brilliant, relayed Coach Thompson, and we will need some more of that steady pitching if we ever make the state playoffs. Budke struck out four batters in his five innings and Greg Panfiloff came on in the final two innings to dispose of the deaf Bobcat bunch. Budke was in trouble only one inning when he had two out and two strikes on the third batter. He proceeded to walk three straight batters before he finally had a Bobcat groundout to end the inning. Gallegos Stars Again Coach Thompson reported that the team would vote for a Most Valuable Player just after the game with Bonneville on Tuesday night. At the conclusion of last Fridays game there were any number of canidates for the trophy, but with the players voting themselves, it could prove to be rather interesting and a little difficult. Orlando Gallegos has to be a top choice for the award. Little Gallegos pounded out two more hits against the Bobcats to boost his batting average to the best on the team at that time, .389. Gallegos scored three runs to help the Royal cause and he stole two bases. Whatever leftover energy was left, was used to play his position at third base or just about anywhere in the infield. Roys big inninf came in the fifth with five runs. Jim McMahon gained base error, Claude Payne singled, Orlando hit into a fielders choice, Jerry Ward delivered a big blow with a on an two-ruscoring triple, Clair Davis picked up his second hit cf the game and another RBI, Budke flew out, Mike McCoy singled to bring in another run, Greg Nichlos singled for h is second hit and Stonehocker grounded out to end the inning. n Lakers golf late Bonneville High School recently participated in the B.Y.U. Invitational Golf Meet. outfiald and preparing to enter the state tournament this Monday are Clair and Davis. f, It was held on May 1st. The Laker team had a total of 308 points, which put them in a tie with Brighton for lowest team score. Brighton won the State ( hampionship last fall with the same score. No team trophy was given because the Slate Tournament was held last fall. Individual points were as follows: Jon Schneiter 72 points, 3rd place medalist; Shon Woodland - 77 points ; Greg Simpson - 78 points; Mark Smith - 81 points. -- (I to r) Greg Nichols, |
