Bit-to- the other night the National Geographic Society showed the Great Wall of China. My home town in Utah doesn't have to take a back seat for anybody because we have the Great Wall of Lorin Farr Park. It was named after the first mayor of the town. It is located in the North-eas- t section of town and the big shade trees and acres of lawn are enjoyed by many people. Every year the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo is held just west of the park. The Ogden river runs along the south side and it used to overflow its banks and cause a lot of damage and erode big holes in the dirt banks. When Franklin Delano was elected Roosevelt president of the United Staes and started the Works Progress Administration, one of the first projects was to build a retaining wall along the north bank of the river by Lorin Farr Park, I know because I helped on this job. We started the work, in the early spring, digging a trench along the north bank of the river. It was six feet wide, at the bottom, which was two feet below the river bed. A group of us were sent, with a dump truck, to go up Ogden canyon for rocks to make the wall. We would climb upon the hillside and pry the rocks loose. The sharp claps of thunder would echo and reecho as the sound bounced off the canyon walls. Then we would hear the soft patter of rain falling on the leaves of the oakbrush in the canyon. During this time we sought shelter under the ledges that the tip of it was as flat as a pancake and was split down the center Boy did it hurt arid yelled like bloody murder until I pot it out One of the men said, It have been worse it could have been my finger! We would crawl under the pipeline to keep dry. One day during a sudden shower we started to crawl under the pipeline when we heard a sound like dry leaves rustling together. We stopped to listen and heard it again. The hair on the nape of my neck started to rise and I backed out of that hole in a hurry. A big rattlesnake was there first. I didn't want any part of him Another day when I was g trying to pry an extral rock loose I was so engrosed in my work and looking for a good spot to pry from, I didnt watch my step.
