It is a coined, ten dollar word -- - originating in the facile mind of Dr. Norman the great Vincent Peale, humanist Reverend who has touched the hearts and lives of so many distressed and troubled Americans from his ministry at the Marble Collegiate Church, New York City. In his book: Enthusiasm Makes the Difference, Dr. Peale relates an interesting experience with a New York cab driver who was lacking It in enthusiasm for life. seems that Dr. Peale and two of his friends engaged the cab driver to take them to an appointment and, upon entering the cab, affably attempted to pass the time of day with the young driver. Their efforts at conversation, however, were spurned by the dismal young man. He merely grunted when his passengers inquired as to his health and the state of his business. Many, especially the youth, spent much of the time in the into that game and were playing their very best and enjoyed every minute of it. The spectators from the stake thought it was a splendid hour of entertainment and Moenjoyed watching the in their off duty roll thers swimming pool. As the 3 friends continued to converse among them- Reverend Peales selves, companions addressed him by his title of doctor. This piqued the interest of the cab driver. Concluding that Dr. Peale was a medical doctor, he decided that it was time for him to enter the conversation and seek some free medical advice. The cab driver proceeded to enumerate his various ills to the responsive Dr. Peale. Do you know of anything that you can give me that will make me feel better? Dr. Peale went along wth the young mans assumption that he was a medical doctor and said: My friend, I seldom practice my profession in taxicabs or give out prescriptions while going along the highway, but since were both here I will be glad to give you the best advice I can. Unhappily, this is too often the attitude of some of our Honorable politicians also. Try interrogating a politician on something he has already decided to vote against (or for, as the case may be), even if the matter is clearly in the public interest, and too many times you get an answer which is a masterpiece of Ambiguity. So we have endless committees. We have government committees to investigate all of the aspects of modern American life -- - which is apparently a necessary thing. But we also have committees to investigate the committees. I te cab driver was so shocked at this grim pronouncement that he barely kept from running the cab off the road. He realized that he had a rare and terrible disease and, with a great deal of concern, he asked Dr. Peale what psychosclerosis means.
